A2Z Challenge — The Letter A

I am unofficially participating in this year’s A to Z Challenge. My theme this year is girlfriends.

A is for Alvis G.

Alvis G was my fourth-grade crush. She was so cute, tall with short red hair in a pixie cut, stunning green eyes, and a face full of freckles. Truth be told, even though we were in the same class, we hung out in different circles, and prior to the night of the Homecoming sock hop in the school’s cafeteria, we had barely exchanged two words.

Being the shy type, I had been watching from the sidelines up to that point and noticed that Alvis had been asked to dance by several boys, but at the end of each record, she returned to her place with the other girls.

About an hour into the sock hop, with the boys lined up on one side of the cafeteria and the girls lined up on the opposite side, the teacher who was spinning the records called for a Sadie Hawkins girls’ choice dance, and invited the girls to cross the cafeteria floor and pick a boy to dance with her.

At first I thought I was imagining it when it looked like Alvis was walking in my direction. But then she stopped right in front of me, held out her hand to me, and asked, “Can I have this dance?”

“You mean me?” I asked, dumbfounded. She responded by grabbing my hand and literally pulling onto the dance floor.

We danced together for every dance for the rest of the night, which was only an hour longer as the dance ended at 10:00. We talked about all kinds of things, laughed a lot, and then she hugged me, pecked me on the cheek, and said goodnight. I was in heaven, thinking about what my life with Alvis by my side was going to be like.

Reality hit me hard on Monday morning. I saw Alvis, smiled, waved at her, and started walking in her direction. She put up her hand to stop me, and I saw her holding hands with Frank, the class bully. Frank saw me and glared at me. Alvis silently mouthed, I’m sorry.

Alvis is the name of the man from my hometown. His family lives down the road from my aunt and uncle, and I went to school with his kids. He once owned a printing shop, and a family friend worked for him. That same friends husband married a woman named Alton. I can’t help thinking how those names are just one letter different form Elton and Elvis. LOL

Jeez. I was going to say how sweet the story was. But that sure is a sour ending in multiple ways. Fourth grade? And, as for that, I was surprised from the start. I guess there are reasons they wised up and didn’t have homecoming dances (whatever a homecoming is in elementary school anyway) in grade schools.

The one that Alvis let get away and I am sure she regrets that now.
