Binding Arbitration

“Your proposal for the settlement of the dispute quickly went south,” the lawyer for one of the partners said in a lyrical, sing-song voice that exhibited his self-satisfied, taunting tone.

“The propsal was meant to serve as a guide to get all parties through this difficult process,” the arbiter said. “To declare failure at this point is pure conjecture and is premature.”

“I, for one, don’t relish the position you’re in,” the other lawyer said. “I don’t think arbitration is going to bear any fruit. The two sides are simply too far apart on the major sticking points. I think we will have to go to trial.”

“Well good luck to both of you,” the arbiter said, packing up his materials, standing up, and leaving the room. “I just hope your clients have very deep pockets,” he added as he slammed the door behind him.

Leapin’ Lizards

We have lizards in our backyard. The photo above was taken of one our lizard friends last summer. Now that the weather is getting warmer, these critters are crawling out from under the rocks (or wherever they have been hiding during the cooler months) to sit out on said rocks and bask their little cold-blooded asses in the warm sun.

Earlier this month, we brought home a rescue dog from a kennel and it seems that she is obsessed with lizards like some dogs are with squirrels. When we take her out in our yard, she immediately starts looking around for any lizard who dares to show itself. And then she leaps after it.

Fortunately, she hasn’t been fast enough to actually catch one. Not yet, anyway. In the meantime, though, maybe we should have named our dog Annie, after Little Orphan Annie, whose catchphrase was “Leapin’ Lizards.”

Thursday Inspiration — Cold As Ice

For this week’s Thursday Inspiration prompt, Jim Adams has given us the word “cold” and the above photo to serve as our inspiration. Seeing the word and the picture Jim presented, the 1977 song, “Cold As Ice” by British-American rock band Foreigner, came to mind. It was written by band members Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song describes a woman who is materialistic and selfish, with the singer warning that her behavior will come back to haunt her someday.

I featured this song back in April of 2019 for Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday prompt, but it’s a great classic rock song, so I hope he’ll forgive me for using it again.

You're as cold as ice
You're willing to sacrifice our love
You never take advice
Someday you'll pay the price, I know

I've seen it before
It happens all the time
Closing the door
You leave the world behind

You're digging for gold
Yet throwing away
A fortune in feelings
But someday you'll pay

You're as cold as ice
You're willing to sacrifice our love
You want paradise
But someday you'll pay the price, I know

I've seen it before
It happens all the time
Closing the door
You leave the world behind

You're digging for gold
Yet throwing away
A fortune in feelings
But someday you'll pay

(Cold as ice)
You know that you are
(Cold as ice)
As cold as ice to me
(Cold as ice)

(Ooh, ooh, ooh, you're as cold as ice)
(You're as cold as ice)
You're as cold as ice
Cold as ice I know
Yes, I know
You're as cold as ice
Cold as ice I know
Oh, yes I know
You're as cold as ice
Cold as ice I know
Oh, yes I know

Frozen in Time

Her eyes were drawn to the beads of perspiration forming on his forehead. She thought it strange how she used to find his wily ways almost irresistible, and how the dulcet tones of his voice to her were like the sweet, romantic sounds of wind chimes being stirred by gentle breezes.

She wished she could freeze those feeling, those memories, in time through some sort of cryogenic method to potentially be revived at some point in the future. But all she could focus on now was the stench of garlic on his breath and the foul odor of his sweaty body on top of hers.
