One-Liner Wednesday — Would or Wouldn’t

“I don’t see any reason why it would be Russia.”

Donald Trump in Helsinki on July 16, 2018

Donald Trump now claims to have misspoken on Monday at the press conference after his one-on-one meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. When asked by a journalist about whether he thought that Russia had interfered with the U.S. presidential election in 2016, what Trump actually said was, “I don’t see any reason why it would be Russia.”

But when he returned Monday from the summit, Trump said that he “realized there is some need for clarification” about his remarks on Russian interference in the election.

“In a key sentence in my remarks” Trump pointed out, “I said the word ‘would’ instead of ‘wouldn’t.’”

“The sentence should have been: ‘I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia,’” he said. “Sort of a double negative.”

And that sort of reminded me of another mix-up of the words would and wouldn’t Trump previously made, which mix-up was perfectly captured in this Facebook post I came across:

That is an understatement. He’s the king of sleaze.

We have entered a world of semantics, slips of the tongue, and age issues. We need to stop thinking a person has to be over 60 to be a good President. With so many disillusioned voters and nonvoters it’s unlikely to change. Heck I can’t even register to vote where I’ve lived for five years now.

Why can’t you register to vote where you live?

It’s online voter registration and the computer won’t accept my DL after trying to register as a third-party or independent. Last voting I was told to walik-in to the voting office on voting day and register as a republican or Democrat then vote however I wanted. You can’t register on the day of the election. I can’t even vote for local school board members without registering as either.

That’s ridiculous. I’m registered as an independent in my state. There should be no reason that you need to register as either a Republuor a Democrat unless is part of a voter suppression ploy.

Exactly. It is here. It keeps you out of local and national elections.

It couldn’t have been better timed. It probably was Putin. Or some 400 pound guy sitting on his bed somewhere in New Jersey.

Well I suppose at least this time it wasn’t a defense of ‘fake news’!

I have to say Trump looked completely star-struck and in awe of meeting Putin, who it seems he admires greatly, and with the deliberate and calculated clarity and emphasis on the word ‘would’ it appeared to all of us that he knew exactly what he was saying – no clarification required. So now he’s either showing himself up as a liar or an incompetent – or perhaps a bit of both.

The guy’s a serious liability on the world stage with his blatantly obvious inferiority complex and attention-seeking narcissistic self-indulgence, and is fast making America a laughing stock. He may well be single-handedly getting the American economy back on its feet in the short-term as all his supporters fall over themselves to remind us, but at what long-term cost?

Not that our UK politicians are anything to be proud of at the moment, either, but for Trump to let himself become Putin’s puppet is a serious misunderstanding and miscalculation on his part of exactly what can of worms he’s opening up…

Sorry for the rant, but in my mind he’s seriously lost the plot, self-styled stable genius or not 😦

Do not apologize for the rant. It was perfect and spot-on.

Oh, you mean his spineless Republican enablers in Congress, in his Cabinet, and on his staff. Yes, they are all complicit and when the history of the fall of the American democracy is written, they will be implicated.

So if he says he would love to see America great again, means he wouldn’t?

The only thing he wants to make great again is his fortune.
