“Look at that,” Jeremy said. “That’s sacrilegious!”
“What is?” Archie asked. “You mean that scarecrow over there?”
“Scarecrow? That’s not a scarecrow, you idiot,” Jeremy said. “That’s Jesus on the cross.”
“Nah,” Archie said. “It’s a scarecrow.”
“Scarecrows have straw hats, straw coming out from their shirt sleeves, and wear overalls,” Jeremy said. “Do you see a straw hat or overalls on that? No you don’t because that’s Jesus being crucified.”
Archie laughed. “You see Jesus everywhere, Jeremy. Didn’t you tell me last week that you saw Jesus’ face on a piece of toast? That thing’s just a simple scarecrow.”

Rome did thousands of crucifixions. According to Josephus, Rome crucified 3,000 Jews in A.D. 7 alone. Roman soldiers were very, very good at making sure their victims stayed alive on the cross as long as possible. Jesus, however, died faster than many crucifixion victims. Interestingly, Jesus’ relatively swift death may have been deliberate. Jewish law dictates that if a man is “impaled on a stake” or “hung on a tree,” both commonly interpreted as forms of crucifixion, the Jews “must not let his corpse remain on the stake overnight, but must bury him the same day.” If Rome was willing to respect Jewish laws, crucifixion victims would have needed to be dead before sundown. Archeological and Scriptural evidence suggest that, in the case of Jesus and the two thieves, Roman soldiers and officials were willing to bow to Jewish law and allow crucified men to die must faster than their unfortunate counterparts in other areas. …

This doesn’t go into a lot of detail but does touch on the family that was in power when (as we often hear in the Christmas stories) the Jewish boys who might’ve been Yeshua were put to death at the order of one Herod (of the oppressors).
