Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

Yesterday I posted about a way to add a drop cap to the opening paragraph of a post to give it a more professional look. And if you go to my blog and read the actual post from there, it does look kind of cool. But I learned today that if you read my post with a drop cap in the WordPress Reader, it’s a whole different story. My question to you, those who read my posts, is this. Do you typically read them in the WordPress Reader or do you go visit my blog and read them on the internet as they were formatted to look?

Let me know, please.

Truthful Tuesday — New Years Traditions

Frank, aka PCGuy, has published another one of his Truthful Tuesday posts. This week Frank wants to know…

What New Year’s traditions, if any, do you observe, and will the current state of things have any bearing on those traditions for this coming year?

Back when our kids were younger and still living at home, New Year’s Eve was game night. We’d play Pictionary, charades, Yahtzee, Scattergories, etc. It was so much fun.

But then our kids grew up and went out on their own, so my wife and I established our own new New Year’s Eve tradition. We would go out to dinner and then go to the late show at a local comedy club, where we would ring in the new year. It was a blast.

But just like everything else that has had to change in 2020, this year we will probably be reverting to a stay-at-home family game night with our kids. But instead of all of us gathering in the same place, we’ll be playing our family games via Zoom.

Desperate and Defiant

T

he Republican Party reeks of desperation as the country has reached the three week mark before the 2020 presidential election. California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted last night that the GOP is “willing to lie, cheat, and threaten our democracy all for the sake of gaining power.”

Just how desperate have the Republicans become? Well, after complaining about voter fraud with mail-in ballots, the California GOP is committing election fraud with mail-in ballots. Republican operatives have set up ballot drop boxes throughout the state with fake “official” labels on them and have encouraged voters to place their ballots in these phony boxes. The California Secretary of State and the State Attorney issued a cease-and-desist order to the California Republican Party, telling it to remove the bogus collection boxes by today. If they do not, there could be unspecified legal consequences.

Of course, the California Republican Party was defiant, saying that it did not intend to comply with the order. A spokesman for the GOP said that the party would not provide a list of all of the locations where the phony ballot drop boxes are placed, and will not remove its bogus boxes. They did agree to change some of the signs. Big whoop!

There are three words for Republican Party in 2020: unscrupulous, unconscionable, and unrepentant.

#WDYS — Time’s Up

“Time’s up,” he said, a menacing tone in his voice. “I guess your family doesn’t care very much about you. And I can understand why. You’re a very difficult young woman.”

She shivered uncontrollably and choked back her tears. “What do you want?” She asked between sobs.

“You know what I want,” he laughed sarcastically. “As I told your parents, it’s their money or your life. But all those grains of sand have passed through the hourglass and apparently your parents are not going to pay the ransom. It seems that they, too, see you for the petty, snobby, bitchy, pain in the ass princess that you really are. So, time’s up.”

She took a deep breath and gathered herself together, summoning as much courage as she could. She knew she was, at that moment, powerless, but she wasn’t going to make this easy for him. “Fine,” she said. “Whatever it is that you’re planning to do to me, just get it done. Are you going to rape me? Well, do it, that is if you are even capable of getting an erection, which I seriously doubt. Are going to kill me? Well, I’m sure my wealthy parents won’t pay you a dime for my dead body. So get it over with. As you said, time’s up, so do what you’re going to do or let me go.”

“Yes, bitch,” he said, “First I’m going to rape you and then I’m going to kill you, slowly and deliberately so that I can watch you suffer as I witness the life drain from your eyes.” He started to remove his pants when she saw a small red dot appear on his forehead. A shot rang out, hitting him right where the red dot had just been, killing him instantly.

“Are you okay, miss?” one of the officers ran over to her and asked. A second officer untied her from the chair on which she was bound.

“It’s about fucking time you assholes got here,” she yelled at the cop standing in front of her. “How could it take you this long to get here, you incompetent idiots? My parents paid a small fortune to have a GPS tracker implanted in my neck. Another five minutes and that jerk would have raped me and then my father would have made sure you both lost your jobs.”

A few minutes after the young heiress was escorted by a special victim’s detective from the room in which she had been held captive, the officer who had untied the girl leaned over and whispered into his partner’s ear, “I kinda wish we’d have waited another five minutes before we breached this place.”

FOWC with Fandango — Cordial

FOWCWelcome to October 13, 2020 and to Fandango’s One-Word Challenge (aka, FOWC). It’s designed to fill the void after WordPress bailed on its daily one-word prompt.

I will be posting each day’s word just after midnight Pacific Time (US).

Today’s word is “cordial.”

Write a post using that word. It can be prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction. It can be any length. It can be just a picture or a drawing if you want. No holds barred, so to speak.

Once you are done, tag your post with #FOWC and create a pingback to this post if you are on WordPress. Please check to confirm that your pingback is there. If not, please manually add your link in the comments.

And be sure to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this prompt. You will marvel at their creativity.
