T
he Republican Party reeks of desperation as the country has reached the three week mark before the 2020 presidential election. California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted last night that the GOP is “willing to lie, cheat, and threaten our democracy all for the sake of gaining power.”
Just how desperate have the Republicans become? Well, after complaining about voter fraud with mail-in ballots, the California GOP is committing election fraud with mail-in ballots. Republican operatives have set up ballot drop boxes throughout the state with fake “official” labels on them and have encouraged voters to place their ballots in these phony boxes. The California Secretary of State and the State Attorney issued a cease-and-desist order to the California Republican Party, telling it to remove the bogus collection boxes by today. If they do not, there could be unspecified legal consequences.
Of course, the California Republican Party was defiant, saying that it did not intend to comply with the order. A spokesman for the GOP said that the party would not provide a list of all of the locations where the phony ballot drop boxes are placed, and will not remove its bogus boxes. They did agree to change some of the signs. Big whoop!
There are three words for Republican Party in 2020: unscrupulous, unconscionable, and unrepentant.
REPUBLICANS ARE EVIL

Everything they complain about “liberals” doing is simply stuff they’ve done, are doing, or would like to do. It’s fucking clockwork now! I wouldn’t be surprised if most of them had or helped someone get an abortion too

What?? You’ve got to be kidding!! The governor should have confiscated the boxes and turned over the ballots to the correct location!!

I think the word despicable would also work for the Republican Party.

Don’t you have some neutral body in the USA who is in charge of running polls and elections? Something like this?
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918. The AEC is responsible for the operation of the federal electoral system in Australia, which includes: conducting federal parliamentary elections and referendums.
If not I think you should really get one.

I think you’re right we should get one. We’ve had something called the Voting Rights Act, a piece of legislation meant to keep historically racist states from unfairly changing their election rules. That was largely gutted by the Supreme Court. But it wouldn’t have applied to California anyway. And what the pachyderm party is doing isn’t about changing the rules, either; they’re just flouting any sense of rules. There should be new legislation (including the establishment of oversight) to pick up the slack for the current problem anywhere — both in terms of laws and rules and in terms of dirty tricks and unauthorized activity. But I additionally agree with Ruth, that the unauthorized trick boxes should have been immediately confiscated.

Of course they should have been confiscated. I felt shocked that they were not.

Shouldn’t it be a “d” for Civil Rights DIVISION?

Seems like it. Maybe this is just another one of those weird things the Trump people do. They (not only he in his tweets) put out official statements, and schedules and so on, with misspellings and other mistakes.

It’s appearing to me that voting is considered an individual civil right (but not really even a right) rather than a good for the whole country. (And even this is an improvement over only landowners or property owners (property often including slaves) being able to vote.

The elections here are managed by state and county government, not the federal government, so it’s a patchwork and there’s a lot of politics involved. It’s a flawed system.

Have to say if that sort of thing is allowed they are not managing it very well. I’ve only done a pre poll vote once and that was overseas but friends do it regularly and there are venues in each major city where you go and they are manned by AEC workers, or you mail them in the normal mail.

Even the one way we have for federally overseen handling or delivery of votes (still in accordance with each state’s rules per time-frame and such) is something Trump has tried to mess up for us when most needed; that is, during COVID-19.

I mean the Post Office. Of course, the Post Office is in the Constitution. So, it makes perfect sense that Republicans would want to destroy it.

Republicans REFUSE to Remove ILLEGAL
Ballot Drop Boxes in California
I just came across this, today.

Yep, I read that.

They also could do, in their tradition of projection, some printing of unauthorized ballots… and stuff them into those illegal boxes.
