Sunday Poser — What, Me Worry?

For today’s Sunday Poser, Sadje wants to know…

Are you worried about your future, personally, or about your country? What saddens or worries you about the future?

I’m not worried about my personal future because there’s simply not that much of it left. What will be will be, as they say. The only “concern” I have is which will go first, my mind or my body.

On the broader scale, however, I am very worried. I am worried that many, if not most, Republicans still support Donald Trump. He is the man who tried to overthrow an election by inciting a siege of the U.S. Capitol Building, and who has been charged with 91 felonies in four criminal cases this past year, has continued to tell The Big Lie, along with thousands of little ones, was twice impeached as president, and has literally pledged turn America into an autocracy. And Republicans have made it clear that despite Trump being considered the worst president in the history of the United States, he is their man. They don’t judge Trump, they love him.

If Trump doesn’t either get convicted and sent to jail or die between now and November 5th, I don’t see how he loses to Biden again. And then it’s all over but the shouting for democracy in America.

And on top of that, we are still doing little to address climate change. We are still in states of war for territorial gains, religious purposes, or both. Or to satisfy the egotistical, narcissistic needs of the men in charge. In the U.S. we are on the precipice of a civil war based upon political ideologies, racism, and nationalism.

Honestly, I think we are going to continue in this downward spiral until we either destroy one another and/or destroy the planet.

But it’s not for myself that I worry about these matter. I’ll likely be dead before all the shit hits the fan. But I feel bad for my young grandchildren. What kind of world will we leave them with?

I Am Worried About…

…the future of classic rock. I’m reading more frequent obituaries about classic rockers I grew up listening to who are now gone. And now that Baby Boomers are old, enrolling in Medicare, going on Social Security, and, dare I say, starting to die off, who is going to listen to classic rock music on radio stations anymore?

I’m lucky that I subscribe to Sirius XM in my car and that I can stream it on my TV and iPhone, because where I live, radio stations that play classic rock are few and far between. Sirius XM has hundreds of music channels, but I focus on just two: Classic Vinyl and Classic Rewind. I listen almost exclusively to classic rock music because it’s the music I grew up on. Why else would people stream or listen to classic rock on the radio if not to be transported back to a day and time when they were vital and still meaningful? Seriously, do you know anyone under the age of 55 who still listens to classic rock?

Were it not for my subscription to Sirius XM, I’m not sure where I’d get my fill of arguably the best genre of popular music that ever was and ever will be.

Classic rock has an illustrious past, but does it have a future? With all of us Baby Boomers aging out of life, I worry that classic rock going the way of the buggy whip, the typewriter, and moderate politicians?

I did not receive any compensation from Sirius XM for this post. But if anyone from Sirius is reading this post and wishes to offer me a complementary subscription when it’s time for me to renew in August….

Thursday Inspiration — Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing

For this week’s Thursday Inspiration prompt, Jim Adams has instructed us to respond to this challenge by using the prompt word worry, or by means of anything else that we think fits.

Back in 70s, one of my favorite artists was Stevie Wonder. And in 1973, Stevie Wonder recorded an album titled Innervisions and one of my favorite songs on that album was “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing.” In this song, Stevie Wonder encourages his lady to be fearless in exploring all life has to offer because he’ll always be by her side.

“Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing” reached number 16 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart, number 10 on the Cash Box chart, and number 2 on the R&B chart.

The Spanish lyric was inspired by a Puerto Rican woman that Wonder met in a record store. He said that he remembered the night he was going to do this song and he just so happened to meet this girl named Rain who worked at this record shop. He told her he was writing a song and he was looking for something different in Spanish and she said, “todo está bien chévere,” which translates to Everything’s really great” or “Everything’s cool.” Although he claims to speak fluent Spanish in the song’s introduction, Wonder didn’t really know the language.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

Everybody's got a thing
But some don't know how to handle it
Always reachin' out in vain
Just taking the things not worth having but

Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, mama
'Cause I'll be standing on the side
When you check it out

They say your style of life's a drag
And that you must go other places
But just don't you feel too bad
When you get fooled by smiling faces but

Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, mama
'Cause I'll be standing on the side
When you check it out

When you get it off your trip
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing

Bam bambam bambam bambam
Bambambambam bambambambam
Bam bambam bambam bambam
Bambambambam bambambambam

Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, mama
'Cause I'll be standing on the side
When you check it out

When you get it off your trip
Everybody needs a change
A chance to check out the new
But you're the only one to see
The changes you take yourself through but

Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, pretty mama
'Cause I'll be standing in the wings
When you check it out
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Yeah
Bam bambam bambam bambam
Bambambambam bambambambam
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, sugar
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, mama
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry
Don't you worry 'bout a thing, sugar
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing
Don't you worry 'bout a thing

One-Liner Wednesday — The Past and the Future

For this week’s One-Liner Wednesday prompt from Linda G. Hill, I’m unabashedly stealing a quote that Marla, at Marla’s World, posted this past Friday. Why? Because it resonated with me.

Here’s the quote Marla posted. It’s from American writer James Meredith.

“Nothing is a bigger waste of time than regretting the past and worrying about the future.”

I also found this very similar quote from another American author, Roy T. Bennett:

“No amount of regretting can change the past, and no amount of worrying can change the future.”
