Clara stood on the deck of her family’s lake house. She checked her watch, picked up her cellphone, and called Cindy. When Cindy picked up, Clara asked, “Where are you guys? Are you almost here?”
Cindy responded, “We’re about five minutes out, according to the car’s navigation thingie. As usual, Arlene was running late, but we’ll be there shortly.”
“Good,” replied Clara. “I’ll meet you all out front.”
A few minutes later Cindy’s car pulled up with Clara’s three best friends inside. Clara motioned for them to hurry up. “Come on, ladies, the champagne has already been poured and it’s on the deck overlooking the lake ready for us to imbibe.”
“Champagne?” Barbara asked. “What’s the occasion?”
“It’s time to celebrate, ladies,” Clara said. She held up her left hand, showing off her engagement ring. Beaming, said, “Peter popped the question last night.”
Clara’s three friends squealed with delight, surrounded Clara and gave her a group hug. With tears of joy in her eyes, Clara said, “Let’s go have some bubbly.”
