Every Monday, Paula Light, with her The Monday Peeve prompt, gives us an opportunity to vent or rant about something that pisses us off.
Since we moved from the city to suburbia in early 2020, we have been plagued by wildlife destroying our plants and yard. We’ve got deer eating the leaves off of our trees and plants, destroying many of them. We’ve had gophers and moles building tunnels and poking holes all over our lawn. And now this:
Last night a whole litter of baby raccoons crossed my driveway and invaded my front yard.
Sheesh, we should never have left the city for the burbs.
This, That, and the Other 
Wow! They’re cute but vicious (killed a cat at my old apartment complex). Moles are disgusting! I see why you’re peeved 😡

Yes, let’s clean up all those nasty creatures. With a little luck, ONLY the insects will remain \with all the insect-eating birds, moles, and other creatures dead. Either you love Earth or you don’t. If you love it, you need to remember Earth wasn’t designed so you could have the best lawn in the neighborhood.
THIS is why we aren’t fixing anything. Who wants those messy creatures (EW) living on OUR property, right?

Yes, the world’s problems are entirely due to my dislike of moles.

It’s not the moles. it’s that other things NOT human have an equal right to live on this planet — and in our gardens — as we do, even if we don’t like them. My husband is terrified of snakes, but there are snakes on our property. Quite a few of them. They eat mice. There are enormous spiders which I find personally terrifying, but I don’t try to get rid of them. They eat smaller insects and mice — and we have plenty of them. Actually, there are more ANTS on this planet — not only in numbers, but in sheer weight — than humans. Seriously. if we effectively eliminate the creatures that eat them? Woe to us.
I’m not thrilled with every wild thing that roams in our woods and on our deck, but I recognize they have the RIGHT to be here. I am the intruder. The other creatures were here first.

Why not? They are just walking across the land. They aren’t doing anything but WALKING. We really care about the earth — just we don’t want any of those earthy creatures anywhere near us.

Raccoons don’t eat flowers. They eat small animals (mice small birds, and insects) as well as seeds. Unless you are feeding birds or something else, all those baby raccoons will do is pass through to somewhere else. Meanwhile, plant flowers deer don’t like eating. There are LOTS of them. Go to a nursery. Ask questions. That’s what people who live in the country do.
Nature is messy. Lawns are a waste of good land that could grow something edible. If we don’t stop destroying habitat, we won’t have any wildlife. We cut down their woods, destroy the weeds with seeds they eat, and then we say how much we care about the earth. Except, really, we don’t, not if it inconveniences us at all. We want neat, tidy wildlife, preferably on our computer or phone. Not to worry. The way things are going, that is the ONLY way we’ll ever see any.
Habitat destruction is THE single biggest reason we are losing billions (yes, billions) of birds and all the other small creatures. Oh hell, let’s kill them all. Get rid of the bees too. Then we can ALL starve.

And don’t treat them like pets because a full-grown raccoon is strong. We had to take the bird feeders down when we were getting raccoons. They are also very smart and they have hands. Tiny little hands with their version of thumbs.

There is an online network here for neighbours to share information – most of it is along the lines of “can anyone recommend a good electrician?” But I was reading something that was a total surprise. Apparently local wildlife – possibly foxes, possible squirrels – have been chewing through cables under or inside cars. Several said there break cables had been munched.

I have a raccoon video for you; not quite as cute and not as displayable of a driveway (in my opinion), though. If you look closely, there are two (I think only two). I haven’t seen raccoons there before. My theory is they are attracted because my mom has been leaving out the trash bin. I don’t know, yet, whether or not she has communicated with the service to take the bin away (which would be inappropriate as it is my service and my house) although she is still putting trash and so on into the container out there (up by the cul de sac). When I was there, I would take the bin out and then bring it back into the garage on Mondays. She likes going up to bed at about five in the evening/afternoon. One day, I hadn’t brought the bin in before 5:30; she called me lazy and acted like it was scandalous the thing was out there when she was in bed. I asked, “It’s only 5:30. Is 5:30 the end of the world for you? (She just didn’t say anything.)

We had a glimpse of the local wildlife here last night too… when I returned from taking my niece to work there was a red fox in the front yard. There seemed to be something on the ground by the curb he was interested in because after we pulled in he ran across the street, but returned shortly after we were back inside the house. Very pretty animal!
