Forgotten Road Warriors

I’ve owned a lot of cars in my day. I was thinking back at some of the cars that I’ve driven over the years and was amazed at how many car brands or iconic models have fallen by the wayside. At one point I owned each of the vehicles in the list below. Do you remember these old, now defunct auto brands or models?

  • Chevy Corvair
  • Sunbeam Alpine
  • Austin Healy 3000
  • MGB
  • Triumph Spitfire
  • Datsun 240Z (Datsun changed its name to Nissan)
  • Mercury Capri
  • Mercury Zephyr
  • Suzuki Samurai
  • Pontiac Firebird
  • Saab 900s
  • Plymouth Voyager

Some other car brands that disappeared in my lifetime (but which brands I didn’t buy or own) are Oldsmobile, Studebaker, Rambler, AMC, and DeSoto.

Did I miss any?

I barely remember the Corvair, probably because it was a car my foster father drove and the associated memories of him have been deliberately forgotten; that and the close name association of the Corvette, and I had wondered what ever happened to Datsun, thanks for the knowledge! 🙂 I’ve never seen (except in pictures) the DeSoto or the Studebaker, but a family friend had a Nash Rambler… You’ve got me going. I’m going to have to list all my long list of hoopies one of these days too! Such history in them all! 🙂

I loved my Isuzu Rodeo SUV. Had it for 15 years, never had to get new brakes. Jordan

Any Chryslers? I had a few Aussie classics, and a few bikes: Kwaka 900, Yammie Gold Wing … Memories.

No Chrysler’s, although the Plymouth was a Chrysler brand. I mentioned in another comment that I also owned three motorcycles, a Yamaha, a Kawasaki, and a Suzuki.

My dad had an Austin Healey. My brother drove an MG. My sister drove a Datsun. And I drove first an Austin America (modelled after the Morris Minor) and then drove an MGB GT. All of that was a long time ago. 🙂

Yes, all of those cars (except the Datsun) were when I was going through my British Roadster phase…a long time ago for me, as well.

Good list but to that I have to ask you mention the humble diesel engine.
In the UK it is being killed off by government and some jackass of a failed politician and the green lobby.

Their intent is no IC engines only electric cars.
IF the old cannot be converted they too will disappear.

When that happens we’re thinking of getting a horse and cart.

There are still a few diesel models sold in the U.S., I think.

A few? Now that is worrying.

I think, all things considered, the Austin Healy 3000. Not very practical, but an absolute blast to drive.

My Dad had a Firebird I got to drive a little… terrible in Iowa winters but it was a fun little summer car. Austin Healy’s are sharp looking cars.
