Cobwebs in the Attic

“Why do you screen all of your calls like that?” Anita asked her older brother.

“I think it’s a good thing to do,” Barry said. “Most of calls I get are people trying to sell me something, getting me to contribute to some cause, or trying to scam me by attempting to extract personal information from me. I’m not going to fall for that crap.”

Sounds to like you have some latent hostility you’re dealing with,” Anita said. “What if it’s an important call?”

“No hostility, just common sense,” Barry replied. “If it’s important, the caller will leave a voicemail message and if it’s a legit call, I’ll call them back.”

“Yeah, I guess that makes sense, Anita said. “I’ll stow that advice up here in the old attic here,” she added, pointing to her head.”

“Make sure you clean out all the cobwebs up there first,” Barry said, chuckling to himself.

Little Devil

I know he’s an angelic looking baby, but I swear he is the devil incarnate. It’s gotten to the point that I just can’t take this anymore. I am tired of changing wet and poppy diapers and trying to get that baby to hush up so I can get some sleep. I think I’ve gotten the equivalent of maybe two hours of sleep last night, and what sleep I did get has been fitful.

I’d like to get back to my wood carving hobby to take my mind off things, but I’m afraid, with my patience waning and my nerves so raw, that I might use the carving knife as a weapon.

So please, sweetheart, I know you’ve only been gone for two days at your business conference, but I have a whole new respect for mothers and I need you to come home soon before I do something to our darling son or to myself that we’ll all regret.

Where are you? I wish you’d pick up. I hate leaving voicemail messages and I hope you get this before….

It’s been a while since I did a daily words prompt post, but I decided to give it a go tonight. Written for these daily prompts: Word of the Day Challenge (angelic), Ragtag Daily Prompt (wet), E.M.’s Random Word Prompt (hush), Your Daily Word Prompt (equivalent), Fandango’s One-Word Challenge (fitful), and My Vivid Blog (wood carving). Sorry, The Daily Spur, but I couldn’t figure out how to get “quotation” to easily fit into this.

#WDYS — Grandma’s Dilemma

Grandma just couldn’t get the hang of it. She didn’t grasp the concept of answering machines. Whenever she called someone and the answering machine picked up, she couldn’t understand that there wasn’t a person on the other end, and she’d start saying, “Hello, hello, hello, it’s Grandma,” and when the voice kept talking over her, she’d get angry. And then, when she heard the tone and thought she had been hung up on, she got even angrier.

We all tried to teach her how to use the voicemail box we set up for her on her own phone, but when she listened to the messages, she didn’t realize that it was just a recording and not an actual person talking to her.

We left Grandma little notes, like “After the tone,” and “Leave us a message.” But even that didn’t work.

One day, Grandma got so angry that she called her lawyer with the intention of cutting us all out of her will. Sadly for her, and fortunately for us, her phone call to the lawyer went right to voicemail.

Grandma’s now gone, but the one thing we all have to remember her by was the voicemail message she left for the lawyer. Who knew the old bat could use such salty language?
