The Perfect Candidate

“The problem is that people are apathetic,” Jason said. “We need to find a candidate who can energize and inspire. Someone who can roar like a lion and yet appeal to all the little lambs who make up the bulk of the electorate.”

Beth shook her head. “What we really need is some eye candy to parade in front of the people. Someone who people like to look at,” she said.

“Exactly,” Jason said. “A candidate who is attractive, powerful, empathetic, trustworthy, and who can virtually shut the door on the other candidates.”

“Right, someone who can appeal to the country bumpkins who live in the bucolic countryside,” Beth said, “as well as those nitty-gritty, elitist urbanites who live in the large population centers on the coasts.”

“Yeah, all that sounds great, but where would ever find such a perfect candidate?” Jason asked.

“Don’t worry,” Beth said. She picked up her phone and sent a text message. A moment later the door to the room opened up and a man and a woman walked in.

“Jason, this is Eric Halderson. He heads up the Robotics Engineering Group,” Beth said, pointing to the man on the right. “And next to him is Canditron, the latest creation from the robotics division and the next President of the United States.”922475EC-266D-4B70-AB07-749BDE7AE07C

Sunday Photo Fiction — It’s In the Can

45025656-DDF6-46F6-AF2B-21C13519C9F0“I can’t believe what a mess it is in here,” Megan said to her husband. “Did your dad ever throw anything away?”

Eric laughed. “Well, he didn’t have a car, so he used his garage to store his collectibles.”

“If you define collectibles as junk,” Megan said.

“Well, make sure you go through all the containers,” Eric said. “There might be some hidden treasures in this garage.”

After a few hours of rummaging through all of the collected crap in Eric’s father’s garage, Megan said, “I’m exhausted. Can we call it a day?”

“Yeah,” Eric said. “I just want to grab that rusty kerosene can from that shelf up there.” He got the step ladder, reached up, and pulled down the old kerosene can. “Holy shit!” he exclaimed.

“Eric, are you okay?” Megan called out as she was just about to exit the garage.

“Megan, this can is full of hundred dollar bills,” he said.

“What was your father into, Eric? There’s gotta be ten grand in this can,” Megan said. She pulled a few hundred dollar bills out of the can. “Ugh, they smell like they’ve been soaked in kerosine.”

“What do you know about money laundering?” Eric asked.

I hope that’s okay.

Tale Weaver — Barely a Ripple

D844DD7F-CDE2-46A0-908B-B3E025A11849He was born
He went to school
He graduated
He got a job
He got married
He had kids
He worked hard for 45 years
He retired
He died
It should come as no surprise
That when he was alive
His life barely made a ripple

Song Lyric Sunday — Zodiac Animals

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme, Jim Adams gave us a list of zodiac animals. I’m not a follower of astrology, but I do know that one of the signs of the zodiac is Leo and that the symbol for Leo is a lion. So naturally I picked the song by the Tokens titled “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” But then I reread the list of zodiac animals Jim provided and guess what — there isn’t a lion on the list.

So back to the drawing board, eh? Well, fortunately, the tiger is a zodiac animal, so my next choice, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” works. Yay!

“Eye of the Tiger” was released as a single in 1982 from Survivor’s third album of the same name. It was also the theme song for the film Rocky III. The song was written by Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik, and was recorded at the request of Rocky III star, writer, and director Sylvester Stallone. Stallone originally wanted to use the Queen song, “Another One Bites the Dust, but was unable to get the band’s permission.

“Eye of the Tiger” was a mega-hit. It held number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks and spent fifteen consecutive weeks in the top ten. Survivor won a 1982 Grammy Award for “Best Rock Performance by Duo or Group With Vocal” at the 25th Annual Grammy Awards.

Here are the lyrics to “Eye of the Tiger.”

Rising up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It’s the eye of the tiger
It’s the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hanging tough, staying hungry
They stack the odds still we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

It’s the eye of the tiger
It’s the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Rising up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

It’s the eye of the tiger
It’s the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger

And just for guns and giggles, here are the two other songs I mentioned in this post:
