Fandango’s Provocative Question #198

FPQ

Welcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question. Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question for your consideration.

By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.

What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.

This week’s provocative question was actually triggered by a couple of recent posts at Renard’s World about artificial intelligence (AI) writing tools called ChatGPT. Here’s one post in which he shares his thought about it, and here’s a second post in which he talks about the rise of AI-generated content.

This whole AI-generated content thing intrigued me, so I downloaded a free AI writing app called Genie to my iPhone. I gave Genie a list of six daily prompt words and asked it to write a short story using those words. Here’s the post that Genie produced, in case you’re interested in reading it.

So, for today’s provocative question, just for grins and giggles, I asked Genie to write a provocative question for me. Here’s what Genie gave me:

What would happen if Al surpassed human intelligence?

If you choose to participate, you may respond with a comment or write your own post in response to the question. Once you are done, tag your post with #FPQ and create a pingback to this post if you are on WordPress. Or you can simply include a link to your post in the comments. But remember to check to confirm that your pingback or your link shows up in the comments.

Unless AI’s “brains” become self-generating, they can never exceed the intelligence of the minds who built them. So far, to the best of my knowledge, they are NOT self-generating. They can do what they are programmed to do and with practice, they can get better at it — but they can’t create themselves.

    Yet.

I really liked that story … in terms of the question, movie plots would improve 😀

Since intelligent beings destroy the lives of others and destroy the ecosystems of earth, I suppose AI would destroy everything faster (being programmed by the people who think they are superior because they have more money or because they are programmers). However, computers could be contained in their boxes and not touch the real world, such that they only put words on screens (or “speak” the words). Then the question is whether people will follow whatever they say instead of thinking. Probably. People already mostly do that, don’t they?

It depends how you define intelligence – some people are already behind the game, and machines outthink them all the time. I’m sure you’ve seen a few of these people spruiking their wares.

I’m a Terminator fan so Skynet is in there somewhere. A good film for Machine Vs Man is the 1983 War Games starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy. All pretty scary stuff.

🙂 Thanks for the mention, Fandango.

Playing with AI is akin to playing with fire, my friend.

I shudder to think what will happen next. Perhaps the deteriorating writing skills of our new generation will take a further nosedive and go into a negative.
