I’d hate to think Mencken’s idea was itself misunderstood, but: I guess the use of ‘any man’ instead of ‘anyone’ was simply a sign of his times.

That’s quite an interesting saying to think about, an odd or quirky part being afflicts. But then it’s payback to see the misunderstandings, I guess. On the other hand, seeing ideas play out can turn up unintended consequences simply called misunderstanding.
