Fandango’s Flashback Friday — December 16th

Wouldn’t you like to expose your newer readers to some of your earlier posts that they might never have seen? Or remind your long term followers of posts that they might not remember? Each Friday I will publish a post I wrote on this exact date in a previous year.

How about you? Why don’t you reach back into your own archives and highlight a post that you wrote on this very date in a previous year? You can repost your Friday Flashback post on your blog and pingback to this post. Or you can just write a comment below with a link to the post you selected.

If you’ve been blogging for less than a year, go ahead and choose a post that you previously published on this day (the 16th) of any month within the past year and link to that post in a comment.

“God Hates Fag Marriages”

In a recent post, I expressed, in the wake of gun-related tragedies such as last week’s horrific shooting in Newtown, CT, my thoughts about the proliferation of guns, including assault weapons, in this country. In that post I commented:

The root causes [of gun violence and mass shootings] they [the NRA and gun advocates] say, are that too few citizens are armed; that we, as a society, have lost our Judeo-Christian beliefs and have forsaken God, who has, in turn, forsaken us; that the media immortalizes publicity hungry mass murders; and that there is too much mental illness in this country.

I then added, somewhat facetiously, I thought, “Surely some nutcases will no doubt blame these mass shootings on the wrath of God visited upon our sick society due to homosexuality and gay marriage.” Well, it didn’t take long for my unfortunate prediction to come true.

The infamous Westboro Baptist Church, known for picketing the funerals of fallen American soldiers and claiming that they deserved to die because the country for which they fought tolerates homosexuality, and whose website is, believe it or not, godhatesfags.com (which, since I first published this post, has since been taken down) is planning to picket the funeral of Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Hochsprung. The WBC might also picket other funerals of the fallen, including those of children, from that tragedy.

The WBC website says the following:

How many more children will you sacrifice to your filthy fag marriages? You proved you hate your kids by making Connecticut one of the first states to institute fag marriage. The blood of the Newtown dead is on the hands of every preacher, teacher, parent, and leader of Connecticut. The dead children of Sandy Hook Elementary are better off dead than to continue being raised for such great wrath and destruction as you have brought to this land. You have a duty to teach your children to fear God or else leave them to desolation, darkness, and destruction.

When I read something like this, I am sorely tempted to go out and get myself a semi-automatic assault weapon and commit a mass shooting of everyone associated with the Westboro Baptist Church.

Hey, isn’t this what the Second Amendment is all about? And it would do wonders for my mental health.

Toe the Party Line

In today’s Republican Party, you have to toe the party line. You have to play by their rigid, uncompromising rules or you have to pay. Let me give you an example.

Today, a New York Republican congressman, Chris Jacobs, whose district in a Buffalo suburb near the grocery store where 10 Black residents were killed in a mass shooting a few weeks ago, has abandoned his campaign for re-election after his support for a federal assault weapons ban caused a GOP backlash.

Jacobs, serving his first term in the House of Representatives, stunned fellow Republicans by embracing a federal assault weapons ban and limits on high-capacity magazines. Jacobs said, “I can’t in good conscience sit back and say I didn’t try to do something.”

It took only seven days for political forces to catch up with him. There was an intense backlash from party leaders, who started pulling their support of Jacobs. A local gun rights groups doxed him by posting his phone number and address on the internet. And he was subjected to a “forceful dressing down” from Donald Trump, Jr. Ooh!

Rather than backing away from his support for a federal ban on assault weapons, Jacobs announced that he would abandon his re-election campaign. Imagine, a Republican politician with a conscience and scruples. No wonder his party is shunning him.

This situation demonstrates that Republican Party officials and activists will not tolerate any deviation whatsoever from their lawmakers on gun policy, despite broad support for gun safety measures by Americans.

Republican Dicks

A72027CC-961A-41FE-82D0-BCA257DB7A2ADid you know that the internet is exposing children to pornography at an alarming rate? Apparently that’s what state legislators in Florida know. They believe that pornography on the internet leads to low self-esteem and deviant sexual behavior. It also contributes to mental and physical illness, difficulty with relationships, and unhealthy brain development.

And so on Tuesday, the Republican-controlled state legislature in Tallahassee, Florida approved a measure declaring pornography to be a public health risk.

The porn resolution was introduced just after the Florida House voted 71-36 against a motion to open debate on a military-style assault weapons ban.

And, of course, this refusal to even debate such a ban happened just five days after 17 people — students and teachers — were tragically gunned down at a Florida high school by a lone shooter with an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle.

But I guess this is par for the course in a state that is shaped like a penis by the state’s limp dick Republicans who are bought and owned by the big, hard guns of the NRA.
