Five Word Weekly Challenge — Who Knew?

“What is that cacophony coming from the patio?” Nick asked his wife, Chris.

“That performer you hired, the one who said he and his group were going to sing ballads to entertain the guests, called this morning. He backed out at the last minute, but he recommended another group to take their place,” Chris said. “Unfortunately, that, um, replacement group is a heavy metal band.”

“Son of a bitch,” Nick practically screamed. “That bastard double-crossed me. He said he would put together a bundle of classic ballads from the Forties and Fifties that my grandparents and the other elderly guests would love. How do you think their 60th-anniversary celebration will go if all this band can play is heavy metal? This is a disaster.”

“Let me see what I can do,” Chris said as she walked out of the kitchen and headed to the patio. She came back about 30 seconds later and grabbed Nick’s hand. “You gotta see this with your own two eyes,” she said.

Chris led him to the patio and Nick stopped short. “Render me flabbergasted,” he said.

What he saw was a group of people ranging from the mid-sixties to maybe ninety twisting and shaking and dancing to the heavy beat of the music like there was no tomorrow.

Nick spotted his grandparents doing some sort of variation on the twist and the pony. Nick’s grandfather gave him the thumbs-up sign and his grandmother blew him a kiss.

“I’ve never seen them so happy,” Chris said to Nick.

“Who knew?” Nick said, a broad grin on his face.

50 Word Thursday — The Flip

He backed carefully into the room, turned, and stared. Perfect, he thought. He marveled at the arched ceiling in the entryway, the beautiful windows, and the thick walls. All it would take is a little TLC, and some sweat equity, and he could make a hefty bundle flipping this property.

(50 words)

Written for the 50 Word Thursday prompt from Debbie Whittam at Twenty Four. The idea is to the photo above and the line, “He backed carefully into the room, turned, and stared,” from Darcie Wilde’s Lord of The Rakes as our muse. Our story must be between 50 and 250 words, in 50 word increments.
