JYProvocative Question #32 — Politics and Purchasing

Our host for the weekly provocative question challenge is Jewish Young Professional, aka JYP. She pointed out that today’s JYProvocative Question was, in part, inspired by this post from me about who will or won’t buy electric vehicles.

How much do political opinions/affiliations affect your purchasing decisions?

I do make a few purchasing decisions based upon political opinions and affiliations. For example, I refuse to watch Fox News, for the same reasons Jim Adams explained in his post.

I would never ever buy a pillow from the My Pillow guy. I would never buy a Tesla (even though I do drive an electric car) because of Elon Musk. I would never step foot into a Hobby Lobby store or get a chicken sandwich at a Chick-fil-A outlet.

I try to avoid buying products that are part of the conglomerate, Koch Industries. Wendy’s Burgers and Papa John’s Pizzas are out. And I won’t buy Forbes Magazine. I also won’t buy Wrangler jeans, Nike products, or Goya beans.

If I learn that a company contributes primarily to conservative or right-wing causes, or that their executives or board members support Donald Trump and other Republican candidates, I will do my best to take my business elsewhere — assuming there is a viable elsewhere.

Bottom line, to the extent possible, I put my money where my mouth is.

Nice post Fandango and I would rather rest my head on a rock than buy a pillow from the My Pillow guy.

Other than Fox or any other Murdoch outlet, I usually don’t know what, if any, affiliation sellers have. Obvious not “my pillow.” I wouldn’t anyway. Overpriced and not worth it, even if the price were cut in half. The others, I really haven’t checked. Ignorance is not bliss but it can make life simpler.

I’m sure some of the companies I buy from have conservative leanings that aren’t “outed,” but if I know about them, I will try and avoid them.

I won’t buy , watch or read anything from the Murdoch media outlets either. I would prefer to buy from ethical companies but sometimes choices are limited here. I think Elon Musk is a jerk so certainly wouldn’t be patronising any of his companies either.

Let stupid conservatives and neo-cons or people who say they’re moderate or centrist, who think they’re smart or clout-worthy, throw money and peace of mind away on a crappy vehicle with bad service options. I didn’t have an opinion on Tesla — maybe slightly positive at the time as Musk wasn’t so famous and the main buzz was less smog — nor opinion toward Musk the first time I saw and felt and entered a Tesla in real life. Honest to god, what junk… except I liked the large sun roof as a concept. Now, though, it’s hard not to have a point of view on Elon.

Otherwise, I’m pretty similar to Marilyn… don’t pay much attention to who owns what. But how could anyone miss the glaring warning signs against My Pillow put out by the owner himself? As she said, obvious. I did wear a “Vote for Bernie” tee-shirt to a party recently; pure nostalgia and color scheme. As for Murdoch, I think we need an extensive and detailed list of anything connected. I’ve seen where he doesn’t necessarily always agree with his news outlets — and that they don’t agree with each other — that he just wants money and backs what works.

Yet, he’s not the only one.

M… strange story. My name, with my number, was in the records of a local plumbing business (because of my having hired the business to perform some major work at a home I’d bought) leading to my receiving a call asking for contribution to a political campaign… huh-whaaat? The owner had decided to run for something like Senator on a MAGA platform. Is this ethical? To use the work connection for political contact? Ethical or not, it was pretty dang stupid. I said I wouldn’t be contacting them in the future. I’ve come to understand he’s no longer connected, however.

Fox Entertainment Group was an American network of studios specializing in filmed entertainment owned by 21st Century Fox. Following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, the group’s assets were folded into various Disney units.

      https://corusentertainment.fandom.com/wiki/Fox_Entertainment_Group#:~:text=Fox%20Entertainment%20Group%20was%20an,folded%20into%20various%20Disney%20units.

The film studios 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Blue Sky Studios were transferred to Walt Disney Studios, whilst Fox Star Studios transferred to Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International

Its former owner, 21st Century Fox, was formerly known as News Corporation, which acquired all the stock of Fox Entertainment Group in 2005. In 2013, News Corporation was renamed 21st Century Fox and its publishing assets were spun off into the newly formed News Corp as part of a corporate re-organization.

It was named after William Fox, born Vilmos Fried Fuchs, who created the original 20th Century Fox Film Corporation.

From CoinCodex in the last month of 2023:

Hulu was created on March 22, 2007, by NBC Universal (owner of NBC and Universal Studios) [AND] News Corporation (owner of the Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox). The Walt Disney Company acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 and WarnerMedia’s stake in Hulu and now has a controlling stake in Hulu.

      From Britannica five days ago:

In 2019 the Walt Disney Company bought 20th Century Fox and became the majority owner of Hulu. Disney also acquired WarnerMedia’s share of Hulu, and it was announced that, after 2024, Disney would buy Comcast’s interest in Hulu, which would make Disney the sole owner of the company.

I make some similar choices, albeit for practical purposes. I don’t pay for a WSJ subscription (nor do I pay for NYT or WaPo) because I don’t like paying for news subscriptions. (I will source news stories for my funny News Update posts from a variety of free sources, including Fox). I won’t buy a Tesla because it’s too expensive. I don’t go to Chik-fil-A because there’s nothing for me to eat there because I keep kosher. I’m not a crafter and there are no Hobby Lobby stores located near me so I have no reason to go to one.
