Weekend Writing Prompt — Turmoil in 2024

The newsfeed headline: “Civil War Warnings Grow Over Texas Border Standoff.”

Newsmax (a far-right TV news channel) and Oklahoma’s Republican Governor Kevin Stitt are openly discussing a civil war between the United States and Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma, and how state forces will combine in a joint defense against the U.S. military.

(Exactly 53 words)

I wish this post was flash fiction, but it’s today’s political reality in the United States. Turmoil in 2024 may be an understatement.

SoCS — Make the Call

For this week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt, Linda G. Hill has given us the phrase “make the call” to play with.

As the phone weighed heavily in his hand, he hesitated, staring at the digits. The number was etched in his memory, but the conversation he needed to have was far more daunting. His heart raced, palms damp with apprehension. This call could change everything. It wasn’t just about the words he had to say, but the potential fallout, the irreversible consequences.

Make the call, he told himself. Make the damn call! He took a deep breath and punched the numbers on the virtual keypad displayed on the phone’s screen. Each tone felt like he was taking a step closer to an unknown precipice.

When he heard the ringing on the other end, it felt as if it was amplifying the drumming of his own heartbeat. When the voice at the other end finally answered, his words faltered. But then, with a quiet resolve, he began to speak, knowing that this call, despite its painful repercussions, was the right call to make.
