This week’s quote is from Adrienne Smith.
“Successful people don’t spam.”
I don’t personally know any spammers, so I can’t say, one way or another, how successful they are. If the purpose of spammers is to lure people to their sites to buy whatever it is they’re selling, and if they actually do manage to get people to do that, then they may, indeed, be successful. After all, given the huge amount of spam being generated every day, whoever is behind it all must be achieving some level of success. Otherwise, why bother?
But my real question is this: are spammers even real people at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if most spam came from robots, or spambots, operating out spam farms in Russia or Belarus or China or New Jersey.
But maybe, just maybe, Adrienne was misquoted and what she actually said was, “Successful people don’t eat Spam.” And if that is, in fact, what she said, she’s 100% correct.

I heard once that Hawaii eats the most Spam per capita. Does this make the Hawaiians not/less successful? Living in Hawaii is arguably a form of success in itself. I went there in October and on the beach of Waikiki, I pondered all the clearly poor decisions of my life that led to me living somewhere that is not Hawaii. I don’t eat Spam though

My mom gets scam calls from California (where she does not live) and from her own local area. They are, I would say, also spam calls… except she wants to hear from these people because they make promises or state hope-inspiring (or insane greed-dangling) lies. She’s won a lottery, they say; she’s going to receive a car, they say; her insurance company is going to give her money out of the blue, they say (and for safe driving, to boot, when she totaled her car recently). She also gets spam emails from supposed attorneys who are going to get her something (which, I explain to her, is only going to be a large bill if they are lawyers at all).

I’m sure a lot of spam is done by bots, but I’ve actually heard humans speaking with my mother from the numbers (and they text with her).
I’ve seen a high-falutant cooking show present a challenge to contestants, while in Hawaii, that they were to concoct a winning recipe/cook with Spam.

I think a lot of the phone spamming is by actual people. There are call centres in India and other countries but a lot are in Asia although they will make out to be in the USA to their victims even using English sounding names. I hope your mother won’t lose any money to these people. She sounds the sort of person they prey on.

Interesting take! I keep getting spam emails from an uber rich woman in California who wants to leave all her wealth to me! Bless my stars.
Well, spammers are indeed largely spam robots but the program was written by some king spammer, rolling in wealth or the reverse since they want to donate to me all their wealth 😀

Ha. Spam is one of the foods my mother packs for her apocalypse backpack (yes, I’m sadly serious). But I think if the world is about to end, eating spam should be the least of our concerns, right?

I’ve bought canned salmon with bones included (for calcium) to have on hand just in case… in the past. I did also use the salmon in a salmon pate in present time (not just leaving canned food to needlessly expire), I wouldn’t have thought of Spam. But I agree — Spam, canned Vienna sausages; we’d just be getting through each day.

Oh, canned salmon is not a bad idea! And I have to admit I do keep some cans of Vienna sausages on hand for the end of the month poor person meals sometimes – put them on a plate with some cooked lentils and hot sauce, and they kinda work. 🙂
