Eh, I don’t agree. Neither people who think they’re right, nor people who might be wrong (do people who think they themselves are wrong exist?) bother to listen, and people who are arguing also don’t bother to listen.

My debate teacher in high school always said, “Listen for understanding, not for rebuttal.”

I had a good debate teacher (and environment), too. Sadly, I’ve observed that debate has changed over the decades… such that most places emphasize rebuttal, scoring points or their turn to talk, rather than listening, understanding, or even making a clear point.

I studied philosophy in college, and I was taught that you should always represent someone’s view (that you’re criticizing) in such a way that if they read it, they would say your representation is accurate.
