MFFFC — Beneath the Surface

It’s a lesson I learned the hard way. From all outward appearances, you were everything in a woman I ever wanted. Good looking, smart, sensitive, caring, sensual. I gave myself entirely to you, believing everything you said to me, and that you were as devoted to me as I was to you.

But in time, you revealed yourself to be a very different person beneath the surface than what you allowed people — most especially me — to experience. Beneath your attractive and compelling facade lurks a dark monster of hidden truths and buried emotions.

One-Minute Fiction — Kidnapped

Two years ago, Andrea bought an e-bike and loved it, but now it was time to take the next step. She was so excited when her new Vespa motor scooter arrived.

Andrea called her closest friends and asked them to meet her at Maison Halwa, their favorite coffee shop hangout. She rode her Vespa to the coffee shop and parked it out front. She got there about ten minutes before her friends arrived.

Barely able to contain her excitement, Andrea eagerly awaited for everyone to show up. When all had arrived and got situated with their beverages, Andrea asked, “Did you all notice the yellow Vespa parked out front when you came in? Well, guess what, that’s mine!”

Her friends all got a questioning expressions on their faces. “I don’t remember seeing a Vespa parked outside,” one friend said.

“Me neither,” said another.

“Oh my God,” Andrea said. “You all are so oblivious.” She stood up and said, “Follow me.”

She led the group outside, looked around, and realized that her new Vespa was nowhere to be seen. “It’s gone!” Andrea shouted. “It’s been kidnapped!”

Barry, one of her friends, asked, “Andrea, you didn’t leave your keys in the ignition, did you?”

Andrea reached her hands into both pockets of her jeans. “Oh crap!” she said.

Share Your World — 10/02/2023

Share Your World

Di, at Pensitivity101, is our host for Share Your World each week. Here are her SYW questions for this first Monday of the fourth quarter of 2023

1. When you were a child, did you have your friends round for tea even if it wasn’t your birthday? Were you invited to stay to tea at a friend’s house??

This must be a British thing because I’ve never in my entire life had anyone over for tea nor have I ever been invited to tea at someone else’s home. I don’t even like or drink tea.

2. What was your first job in adult life?

I’m going to reference my first full-time job after graduating from college. I was hired as a managent trainee for the local Blue Cross & Blue Shield plan (not-for-profit health insurance company). I spent my first year making three month stints at four different departments before being assigned my first role as a supervisor of a customer service center. I spent almost a decade with that company in ever larger roles before moving on to my next “adventure.”

3. Do you enjoy shopping (food, clothes, gifts, etc.)?

No. I consider any kind of shopping to be a chore and to the extent I can do it online, I will.

4. What was the best bargain you ever got?

I don’t know that I’m a “bargain” shopper. If I need something, I buy it. If I want something and can afford it, I buy it. But I guess, in hindsight, one of my best “bargains” was when I paid way under market price for a fixer-upper house and eight years later sold it three times what I paid for it.
