Half of American adults live with one or more diet-related chronic illnesses, and poor diet is the primary cause of ill health in the country, leading to 700,000 deaths annually, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
So what does the Trump administration, under the leadership of America’s junk food president, do to address this issue? Well, for starters, it says fuck the scientists. What do they know? The Trump Administration has made a decision to direct the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture to limit scientific input to the 2020 dietary guidelines. This includes the guidelines with respect to the consumption of red and processed meats, for ultra-processed foods, which account for a growing percentage of calories consumed by Americans, and to the appropriate sodium (salt) levels for different populations.
Almost all dietary and nutritional experts have been recommending that Americans eat less red meat, cut back on their intake of salt, and avoid ultra-processed foods. So to Trump, it makes sense to shun scientific input into this dietary and nutritional research and to, instead, rely on the processed food industry’s lobbyists to influence “healthy” eating recommendations for all Americans.
But isn’t this the way of Donald Trump? He puts former coal, gas, and oil executives or lobbyists in charge of the departments of the Interior, Energy, and Agriculture and he picks a former Big Pharma exec to lead the Food and Drug Administration.
Big Business now runs the American government in the age of Trump. He has certainly been stocking, not draining, the swamp.
Ever heard of THE OMEN?

It must be that if he feeds everybody junk food, everybody will die from too much salt and fat and malnutrition before they get to 65, and won’t need medicare — what better justification for cutting back on medicare 😦 ! How else can he justify denying science at every turn?

I guess that’s his plan…kill us off before we can collect Social Security or need Medicare. 😤

Maybe cigarettes will make a comeback too. Should we be buying stock in tobacco farms?

Maybe pot farms.

I believe tobacco farms still receive a healthy (or unhealthy) subsidy from the Federal budget.

To me? It’s all part of that idiot’s master (and evil) plan to rid himself (and future dim wit politicians who might become ‘God’ or “king”) of all the old and chronically ill folks in America. Hey, if a hurricane (cyclone, tornado what have you and yes I do realize they’re all different storms) can be ‘stopped’ by nuking it, why not add a lot of red meat and salt to the diet? He’ll have the elderly dropping like flies and the chronically ill who should ingest much salt the same.

Er, should NOT ingest much salt is what I meant to say.. 😐

There are many voices here focussing on the environment, not even ideological per-se, who are talking about the carbon cost of eating meat, not least all our agriculture that is set aside to grow animal feed. So, there are fears of future food shortages and calls from people to eat less meat. I myself eat mostly vegetarian, some even vegan.
My point I suppose is that there is a general belief here that food and climate change are related. Why doesn’t it surprise me then that a guy who doesn’t think climate change is a problem also thinks that processed food isn’t a problem?

It shouldn’t surprise.

Sadly, the US government has almost always been run by big business and special interests, not the people. It’s just become more blatant with Trump.

True. But MUCH more blatant.

I shouldn’t be surprised by what he does by now, but every time, it just leaves me shaking my head. Hurry up 2020!

You’re assuming that there will be free and fair elections in 2020 or that if he loses, he’ll actually give up the office and the White House “quietly.” Don’t count on it.

Not sure “like” is the correct response to this. One more reason to start to change references to the political far “right” to the far wrong.
