Rory’s Morning Dawdler — 02/23/23

Rory, the king of questions, also known as the Autistic Composter, has come up with a new series of questions that he calls “The Morning Dawdler.” He poses four questions three times a week, (although only three today), questions he says are “inspired by life, humor, conversations and observations, town life, blog posts, writers, gardening, news stories, television, entertainment, and human curiosity, and so on.”

Here are Rory’s four three morning dawdler questions today.

Are you quiet or vocal when watching television, a movie, or a film? Can you sit there with others and watch silently, or are you filled with oohs, ahhs, and other gesture forms?

I’m generally quiet when watching TV or a movie. I may recoil a bit at a particular gruesome scene, or flinch if I’m watching a suspenseful film and something unexpected happens, or laugh out loud if something really funny happens, but I mostly just sit and watch silently. I get really irritated when watching TV and someone in the room talks during the show.

How many rolls of toilet paper does your household use monthly on average?

As many as it takes.

Do you believe that if a person takes a life, they destroy a part of themselves – what are your views on this?

I can’t imagine taking another person’s life and I think if ever that would happen, I’d be haunted by it for the rest of my life. But do I believe that if a person does take a life, they destroy a part of themselves? No. Maybe it should, but I don’t believe it does. There are too many sociopaths and cold blooded killers out there who care little about human lives.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?

I’d be a giant Redwood tree. Why? Because Redwoods are the tallest trees on earth, reaching more than 350 feet high. Nice view, huh? And Redwoods can also live for thousands of years.

Name 5 uses for a stapler other than stapling.

  1. Paperweight
  2. Weapon to throw at a coworker who is annoying you
  3. Musical instrument in the percussion family
  4. To attach things to walls or bulletin boards
  5. In a surgical setting, to join tissue together to close a surgical wound.

Do you believe in tipping for good service received and do you think that tipping makes for a better service?

I assume this question is about financial gratuities and not a tip of the hat or which horse to bet on in the fifth race at the track. In that context, yes, I do tip for good service and I believe that the prospect of a tip can lead to better service.

Do you have a blog to write or do you have a blog to socialize only and which one could you survive without if one was taken away?

I have a blog to write. The socialization aspect of blogging is icing on the cake. I started my first blog in 2005 and until I migrated it over to WordPress and discovered a vibrant community of bloggers, my posts generated minimal social interactions.

As to Rory’s question about one being taken away, I’m not sure how to answer it. If the socialization aspect of blogger were taken away, I would still write blog post with no or limited socialization, just as I did for nine years between 2005 and 2014. But if the writing aspect of blogging were taken away, what’s left? No writing, no blogging, right? Maybe I’m not understanding the question correctly.

What is it about writing that you enjoy?

I feel that I can express myself much better in writing than I can verbally. Writing down my thoughts, opinions, and perspectives gives me an opportunity to read what I’ve written and to refine it, sometimes multiple times, until it expresses exactly what I’m thinking or feeling. I also enjoy how writing gives me an opportunity to flex my imagination and hone my composition and crafting skills when I write short pieces of flash fiction. Finally, I enjoy the interaction with other bloggers here on WordPress.

You have twenty minutes to take five practical everyday items from your house that will fit into a backpack that you will need to survive for two weeks in the wild – what do you take?

I’m not exactly a survivalist and I doubt I’d ever find myself spending two weeks in the wild. But I think I’d need these six items at a minimum.

  • My iPhone and charger.
  • A large water bottle.
  • A sleeping bag.
  • A warm jacket.
  • Thick socks.
  • Hiking boots.
  • Oh, one more thing: a box of kitchen matches.

Have you ever experienced road rage while driving in your car as a driver or passenger in someone else’s car?

I get angry when I see drivers do really stupid or dangerous things on the road, but I try to keep my rage in check. As my wife often reminds me, in the U.S., you never know who may be armed.

Do you complain or keep quiet if you receive lousy service when out and about and what is most likely to tick you off the most?

I will complain if I’m served the wrong dish or if something that should be served hot is only like warm. What ticks me off the most is when the person I’m dealing with is downright rude or nasty.

Here are Rory’s four morning dawdler questions from yesterday that I’m just getting around to today.

What is the weirdest fact you know?

This is not the weirdest fact I know, but it’s the most disturbing. There are more firearms in the United States of America than there are men, women, and children combined. And Americans purchased more firearms in 2020 and 2021 than at any point in the nation’s history. Furthermore, the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. is guns. Think about that.

Which meal is your favorite: breakfast, lunch, or dinner?

I’m going with breakfast because I have same breakfast almost every single day: a bowl of half Special K, half Wheaties, with a scoop of raisins and a sliced banana over which is poured enough organic 2% milk to just cover the cereal flakes. It’s a no brainer, whereas lunches and dinners require more thought and preparation.

What do you enjoy most about your blog?

Interactions with other members of the blogging community.

What are you passionate about outside of writing?

Right now I’m most passionate about doing everything I can to facilitate and speed the healing of my broken hip and injured right shoulder, including religiously doing the assigned in-home exercises.

Yes, I know it’s not morning and it’s not even January 25th anymore. But that aside, here are Rory’s four morning dawdler questions from yesterday and my answers for today.

On a scale of 1 – 10, how happy are you?

Well, considering that almost two weeks ago I fell off a ladder, fractured my hip, had partial hip replacement surgery, and have been in the hospital since then, my happiness meter was barely registering at 1. But then this is my last day and night in the hospital rehab unit and that I’m going home tomorrow, and am really stoked about that. So on average, I’d say my happiness meter is around 6.

Why do people ask how we are but do not want to know the truth?

I think they’re just trying to be courteous by feigning interest. By the way, I don’t think most people are like that when it comes to close friends or family. More so, though, with acquaintances or work associates.

How much meat do you consume in a week, and if you are not a meat eater, have you ever considered meat alternatives, and if so, what are they?

I’d say that probably a third of the food I consume is meat. The rest is comprised of poultry, seafood, various veggies, grains, and Ben & Jerry’s Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream ice cream.

Are you a slow or fast eater, and which behavior do you think is best and why?

I think I eat at an average pace, but probably more toward the slower end of the spectrum than the faster end. I don’t think being a fast eater is good for you. Better to eat slower and savor your food than scarf it down quickly.
