Other Fish in the Sea

72C5F241-C822-4995-834F-02DECC658D3E“Dammit,” Jack said. He was visibly upset as he stormed into my dorm room.

“Hey, dude, what’s got you so shaken?” I asked.

“I asked Barbara to the formal,” Jack said. “She’s such a fox, right? But do you know what she said?”

“Did she turn you down, buddy?”

“Oh yeah, she turned me down, all right,” Jack snarled. “She said I was trash. She called me an animal. She said my family had no money to speak of and that I was beneath her. She made me feel like a real piece of shit.”

“Don’t worry about her,” I said. “She thinks, just because her family comes from wealth, that she’s some sort of hot-shit debutante. But she’s just a snooty bitch and is not worth wasting your time and desire on. There are plenty of other fish in the sea.”

“Yeah, well, I suppose that forgetting about her would obviate the need for me to rent a tux for the formal,” Jack joked.

“Oh come on, buddy. You’ll find someone even finer to take to the dance in no time, Jack,” I said.

“That’s true, dude,” Jack said, a confident smile returning to his face. “They don’t call me Jack B. Nimble for nothing.”

Prom Pictures

A01E52DB-065B-4986-B830-D0861F04ECEBRobert had his camera ready to take a picture of his daughter, Meagan, and her date, Harry. “Daddy, whatever you do, please don’t embarrass me in front of my friends,” Meagan pleaded.

“You’re friends?” Robert said. “I thought it was going to be just you and Harry. You know it’s a long standing tradition to take a prom photo of a daughter and her prom date, not her whole coterie.”

“But Daddy, these are my best peeps,” Meagan said. “I can’t risk offending any of them by not including them in my prom pictures. That would be mega-eerie.”

“Well, I suppose I can take separate pictures of you and Harry, Kate and William, and Charles and Camilla,” Robert said. “And then one of your whole group. Will that work for you, sweetie?”

“Oh yes, Daddy, that would be fleek,” Meagan squealed.

Robert looked over at his wife and said, “Life with a teenage daughter certainly can be stimulating.”
