Di, at Pensitivity101, is our host for Share Your World each week. Here are her SYW questions for this week.
1. What was the most memorable gift you gave someone?
Maybe it was when my wife and I contributed a significant sum of money for the down payments to our daughter and our son so that each could purchase their first homes.
2. What was the most memorable gift you received?
It was for my 60th birthday present when my wife got us tickets on the scenic Rocky Mountaineer train that took us from Vancouver, Canada to Banff across the Rocky Mountains.
3. For the guys:
Do you surprise your partner with something for no reason at all?
Not very often.
4. Have you accepted a gift with pleasure, even if you hated it?
Lately, for my birthdays, my kids have gotten me gag gifts. I acted like I was pleased, but my internal reaction was why bother? In their defense, though, I’m a difficult person to get gifts for.
That was a nice gift for your anniversary

Nice post Fandango. Gag gifts can be fun (I bought my FIL some boxer shorts and a singing tie. Drove MIL nuts and she told him to turn his tie off so he turned up the volume!) Hubby says I’m difficult to buy for, yet I appreciate anything. Thanks for joining in.

I’m impossible to buy gifts for unless you know me inside out. My mother always got me things SHE wanted. Owen tends to get me good gifts, though they are almost always “tools” for the kitchen of something electronic. Garry buys me orchids. Good think I like plants or he would keep buying me clothing that’s too small. He really believes I’m about 20 lbs lighter than I am, which is charming, but I do wind up with a lot of lovely clothing that will never fit.
I think past a certain age, we are ALL hard to gift. We have what we need and what we don’t have is beyond what most people can give.

“We have what we need and what we don’t have is beyond what most people can give.” Well said, Marilyn.

When my children were children, I got them everything I could come up with that they marginally needed or would like. Now that they are grown, I prefer to find simple things that have an inkling of knowing who they (or their significant others) are. These might be things they would casually buy for themselves, but haven’t gotten around to or discovered yet. For example, my oldest daughter-in-law has always liked Seinfeld (the show). The most recent gift I gave her (as well as another small item) was the Seinfeld version of an electronic game played with company on a television. (She likes to have company at their house.)

* She has other versions of this game already and likes it and games in general (whether electronic or not).

Not a “gamer” though.

Keep your sense of humor Fandango, the older we get the more we need it. I would buy a gag gift because I’ve seen many “appropriate” ones for laughs but it’s too expensive. Maybe hint at an Amazon gift card etc?

We are looking into the Rocky Mountaineer trip. Something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.

I too might be a bit put off by a gag gift but would laugh it off and smile. Oh wait, I did get a gag gift – a clock that had all the numbers jumbled in the corner saying “whatever, I am usually late anyway.” I was hurt but laughed just the same. 😢
