The Garden Dawdler — 04/09/23

Rory, the king of questions, also known as the Autistic Composter, has come up with a new series of questions that he calls “The Garden Dawdler.” Rory is posing “nine questions once a week for your leisure or pleasure.”

Here are Rory’s nine Dawdler questions today.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I try to be creative and original for my flash fiction posts. For my non-fiction post about politics, society, life, and religion, I express my personal observations, thoughts, opinons, and perspective, which are my own. For the prompts I host, my goal is to inspire other bloggers, to stimulate their imagination and tickle their creativity. To that extent, I am trying to deliver to readers what they want.

Do you recover well from setbacks to your plans?

Sure. I get up, dust myself off, and try something different.

How did you meet your other half?

We were a fix-up, a “blind date.” My brother-in-law was playing tennis with my future wife’s father. He got her number and urged me to call her. I did. And two years later, she and I got married.

What was your very first paid job/employment?

Other than my newspaper delivery route and raking leaves, mowing lawns, shoveling snow for neighbors as a kid, my first real job was as a sales clerk at the camera counter in a department store for $1 an hour.

What Do You Prefer: Fruits or Vegetables?

I like both. I put raisins and bananas on my cold cereal each morning. Other than that, though, I generally prefer veggies with meals and fruit either between meals (as healthy snacks) or after meals (as desserts).

How open to new experiences and adventures are you?

At this point in my life, I would say that I’ve had enough new experiences and adventures, so I think I’d rather chill out at home or with my kids and grandkids.

Are you afraid or confident to speak your mind?

I’m very confident speaking my mind on my blog. Less so in real life when in the company of people I don’t know very well. That said, when asked, I’m never afraid to speak my mind.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

It definitely energizes me.

What do you think the best pizza topping is?

Mushroom and pepperoni. Or barbecue chicken, onions, and barbecue sauce.

Wow a buck an hour Fandango, was their commission on top for sales? I remember years ago when l first got into the UK from Australia in 77, my first paid job as a part time gift shop sale’s person l was paid £2.50 an hour and 30% commission on everything l sold. That summer l developed the gift of the gab and the managers saying “That lad could sell oil back to the Sheikhs!” That’s how ebnthusiastic l became.

Jobs prior to that were mostly ‘bob-a-job’ with the cubs and scouts.

    Pizza topping sounds good.

No commissions on that job. Just a flat buck an hour. But that was in 1964.

Out of curiosity, I used an “inflation calculator” I found on Google and it said that the buying power of $1 in 1964 is about $30 today.

Wow that is interesting, l always find things like that fascinating. So what did your buck back in the day get you and how many hours were you working?

I was telling a friend of mine when l was 19 l was working in catering. My contract was officially to cover 70 salaried hours a week and for that my salary was £4800 for the year.

Running that through the same calculator and based in 1982 it works out to just under £16,000 in 2023.

I used to like pepperoni. Either the quality of pepperoni has diminished or my tolerance for salt has diminished. One way or the other, it’s too chewy and salty. I think it’s just not very good pepperoni.

I stay away from anchovies. Way too salty for me.

I’m not sure there is a “too salty” for Garry. Although he doesn’t salt is food, so go figure.

I too had paper routes and cleared snow for my neighbors in the winter before school… the worst part of both those jobs was the early wake up time. But with my allergies I didn’t have to do more than sweep the cut grass at home. As I got older I branched out into babysitting jobs before my first job at a local restaurant. If I remember right I got maybe around $3 an hour in the 80s.
