Another day, another mass shooting at a school in the United States. Six dead, including three nine-year old children. It marks the 13th school shooting in the United States so far in 2023.
Yesterday it was in Nashville. Where will it be today? Tomorrow? Next week? It’s anybody’s guess. But you know it will happen. You know that there will be more children who will die needlessly in this country.
At least 57 people have died in 38 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this month alone, with another 133 injured. And in the first three months of 2023, there have been 130 mass shootings. Incredibly, there have been more mass shootings in the United States than there have been days this year.
Politicians are, as usual, sending out their thoughts and prayers to the people of Nashville. I think it was Albert Einstein who was alleged to have said that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. This reality of doing little more than sending out thoughts and prayers is absolutely insane.
I am mad as hell at the spineless GOP legislators who refuse to do anything about these mass shootings. Instead of proactively addressing the problem of the proliferation of guns in our nation, many red states politicians are, instead, loosening up the regulations and allowing open carry of loaded guns in more places with no permits required. WTF?
If Americans really want to make America great again, we need to start taking names and kicking asses. We need to vote NRA puppets out of office and replace them with legislators who support enacting stricter gun control laws, such as universal background checks and bans on assault weapons, in order to make it more difficult, not less difficult, for people to obtain guns and use them to commit violence.

Republicans are not willing to budge on the assault weapons ban, because that would take away their freedom.

And any financial kick-backs as well as incentives (legal or otherwise) they receive from the NRA and their supporters. In the dollars versus lives competition, dollars always win. It’s totally and completely nauseating.

I agree. It makes me sick that this keeps happening over and over and over again.

What about the freedom of those children to live a full life?

I imagine that the children’s freedom is less important to them.

Thoughts aren’t enough, the gun law needs dealing with. I get that in America it is deep rooted but children shouldn’t lose their lives. The UK isn’t perfect, and knife crime is bad, but the damage done with guns is far worse.

I appreciated the following, quoted from twitter yesterday: “A well-regulated militia doesn’t kill children!”

There should be no debate about loss of freedom. Owning an assault weapon is NOT guaranteed by the Constitution. Regulating these weapons for the good of the people is the same as regulating seat belt use for the good of the people. It’s not a question of rights, it’s a question of safety – for everyone!

It’s hard for me to understand the mindset of these people who feel that not being able to own an assault weapon is a violation of their freedom. It’s harder to understand why they won’t even agree to laws that mandate safe storage of weapons. I know there are many Americans like the commenters on this page who agree with me but standing here in Australia where we have very few mass shootings I just want to yell “What is wrong with you people?”

They seem to care more about their guns than they do about their children. 😕

You already know I share your rage completely. The icing on the cake for me was when Congressman Steve Scalise, himself a victim of a mass shooting, said that legislation is not the answer, but prayer is the only answer. BULLSHIT! Millions of people have prayed for decades and the problem continues to escalate, our children keep dying senselessly. Yes, it will happen again … I don’t know when, I don’t know where, but you can be your bottom dollar it will happen again … and again … and again. BAN assault weapons, write sensible gun control laws, get rid if ‘concealed carry’, and have a ‘one strike you’re out’ policy for domestic violence! But no … the NRA donations and ratings are more important to Congress than the lives of our children!

It’s that disconnect I don’t understand! They’re choosing over children and human life in general.

It is crazy. We are banning books, drag shows and classic art to protect our kids morals, but nothing to save their lives.
