At 6:45 this morning our power went out. This was our fourth outage in the past eight days. We’ve experienced heavy rains and strong, gusty winds, which have caused numerous downed trees falling across and taking out power lines, so it’s not surprising that we’re having all of these power outages.
The good news is that we have a whole house generator that kicks in as soon as the power goes out, and within seconds of the outage, our power is restored by the gas generator. We have lights, WiFi, a functioning refrigerator, stove, oven, TV, and everything we need. So, while these outages have been a bit of an inconvenience, our “suffering” from these power outages has been minimal.
But today, at 10:45 am, four hours after the power went off, our generator stopped working. I went outside to the unit and saw an error code and a message on the display screen to contact my generator service provider. I did make that call and was told that they are slammed and will do their best to get someone out to take a look at what the problem is and fix it today, but it might not be until tomorrow when they can get to us.
In the meantime, we are in the dark…or will be once the sun sets tonight.
Dang that sucks! I’m sorry, sending hope haha!!

Ughhh! I woke up in the night to a storm so raging it scared both me and my cat. It stopped after a bit, but I couldn’t sleep again for a while. This rain is getting old!!!

And the fucker in charge gets paid millions. A good argument for public ownership.

I did try rebooting…to no avail.

Give it another boot, a size 10 should do 😁

We lost power last night but luckily it didn’t get dark until about eight o’clock and so we just went to bed.

That’s tough.

Yup. So now, let’s add a few million electric cars to the mix. THAT’LL fix it!
We need a different fuel, not more generators. Just saying. Sorry about your generator. Tom & Ellin have a generator and they do not seem to have these problems. Maybe you need better service people?

Or maybe mine’s a lemon.

I try to not think that. I may not be religious, but I’m definitely superstitious. It’s possible. But to the best of my knowledge, once properly installed, generators are notoriously reliable. I know NOTHING about this, mind you — only that in this neck of the woods, many MANY people depend on generators. I’d be getting upset by now. Hell, I’m getting upset FOR you!

It’s only 3 years old and it should be notoriously reliable, but once this latest failure is addressed, should it happen again, I’m going to demand a replacement. It’s still under warranty.

You should. It should NOT be failing repeatedly like this. There is something wrong either with the machinery or the installation, but something is very wrong.

Or for a change, no power can be a bliss to have a candle night dinner or may be spend some quality time with fam. ( But I wish you get your power back soon, but in the meantime you can enjoy too)

September 2008, our electricity was out for a full 8 days, and worse yet, the electricity at the local shops and grocery stores was also out. It was not a fun time, but it also made me think … how reliant we are on electricity. If it were to go out nationwide for months, as could happen, how would we manage? We are ill-prepared for such an event, and I don’t even know how to begin preparing. I hope your generator is fixed soon!

The power came back at around 2:45, but I still need the generator technicians to come out and troubleshoot the problem. As to our reliance on electricity, that’s why there have been so many instances recently of right-wing paramilitary groups attempting to target local power plants. Their aim is to shut down the power grids and create chaos that will lead to anarchy.

Yes, anybody who wants to do real harm to the people of this nation only needs the knowledge and manpower to knock out a power grid. And then there are the nations that have EMPs and know how to use them. If you haven’t read this by William Forstchen, I highly recommend it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Second_After

The book sounds intriguing. I’ll take a look.

I did some research after reading it and found that EMPs are very real and are in the hands of several countries, most worrisome being, of course, Russia.

One thing I have is a handheld radio-flashlight combo with a hand crank to generate the power.

That’s handy! I didn’t know such a thing existed!

I need, now that I’m thinking about it, to get a mini generator with a hand crank to plug my phone into (for one thing). I’m sure it exists although I’ve not seen it. I want another flashlight to be attached. Maybe I’ll find some extra bulbs.

I have a couple of mini chargers, and they are great, but you have to charge THEM using … guess what … electricity! They’ll charge my phone or my Kindle, though, 5 or 6 times before they need to be re-charged.

If the fault is with the HVAC company, is it time to sue them?

No, this is an issue with the generator. The service technicians are coming out tomorrow to fix it.

Oh, you got new data today. I had thought your generator company said that the HVAC company set up the circuits so that they would be bypassed when the generator kicked on do to a power outage. That doesn’t quite make sense after all, though, if the generator kicked in for four hours and then quit. Frustrating.

Two different matters. The HVAC company did, in fact, screw up the wiring such that it bypassed the generator. And when the power when out and generator went on this morning, everything electric in our house was restored EXCEPT for the new HVAC. That still has to be addressed. But the generator shutting down after four hours this morning was a separate matter within the generator itself and had nothing to do with the HVAC installation issue.

Very inconvenient! I’m so glad you don’t have medical equipment necessity.

Well, if a severe storm hits my city, then power is expected to go out for more than half a day or may be more. We have generator but it is manually operated and it can only support light bulbs and fans and Wi-Fi. But it can’t run for more than 4 hours.

What kind of generator do you have? We’ve been looking at them.

It’s a Generac and it’s been working well since we had it installed in 2020. But we did have to replace a control panel (covered under warranty) and now need to address yesterday’s failure. But overall, I’m happy with it. When the power goes out, the generator kicks on and it has the capacity to get everything in our house back working until the power is ultimately restored.
