January 2023 — Whatta Month

I’m so very happy that today is the last day of the month. For me, personally, January 2023 has been the worst month of my entire life.

There were only eight days this entire month that I was relatively pain free. The month started off with me hurting my back on New Year’s Day and suffering from severe lower bag spasms. Within four days of that injury, though, the back spasms had stopped and I was close to pain free. And that period of painlessness lasted for another week.

Then I fell off a latter, busted my hip, had hip replacement surgery, and spent two weeks in the hospital (including rehab). Now I’m at home and am undergoing home-based rehab services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and visiting nurse visits.

(That sounds redundant, doesn’t it? “Visiting nurse visits”? By definition, visiting nurses visit patients, so I’m not sure how else to describe what they do. Oh well, deal with it.)

So anyway, today is the last day of the worst month of my life. February can’t possibly be any worse, although I’m not expecting it to be a particularly fun month. I will be going through in-home rehab for the entire month, and hopefully, by the end of the month, I’ll reach the point that I’ll be able to walk again without having to use a walker.

So here’s the deal.

First, I expect you’re getting tired of my whiney posts about poor Fandango and his broken hip. So I’m going to try to minimize such posts. Second, as my energy level improves, I will try to get back into reading more of your wonderful posts, responding to daily word prompts, photo prompts, and to share my observations and perspectives on what is going that doesn’t involve poor Fandango and his broken hip.

Although, truth be told, it’s been kinda nice not paying attention to all of the political and societal bullshit during the past three weeks. Almost blissful.

Regarding this line, “February can’t possibly be any worse…”, I offer one piece of advice: don’t tempt fate!

Anyway, I hope February brings respite and relief.

I don’t consider any of what you wrote, whining. The support and caring of friends can be a big part of your healing. I can understand how missing much of the news and useless drivel can be somewhat blissful. Here’s to February being a much better month for you! I hope you feel better every day.

Yes, the support and kind wishes are appreciated. I just don’t want my blog to turn into me complaining about my aches and pains.

I always ignore all the political and social blether, and I’ve not even a broken hip to blame. To be honest, I don’t mind the hip stuff. I’m finding it interesting. I’d like to know what sort of PT they’re having you do.

The focus of the PT is to restore the muscles in the leg, hip, and buttocks that had to cut be cut into in order to insert the titanium artificial hip in my femur. That’s critical to being able to walk on my own again. It’s very painful, but necessary.

My mother had a hip replacement, but she never talked about her recovery or the difficulties associated with it. That’s why I’m finding this interesting. I hope February sees you in less discomfort.

Why wouldn’t she talk about it? She didn’t want to burden you or have you worry about her? I, too, hope February will be a better month.

No, it was just her way. If she didn’t want to do something, or talk about something, we all knew nothing would come of our asking further.

As long as there is cheese 🧀 and crackers 🍘we will all survive, Fandango. I don’t see a lot of whining in what you’ve been posting. It’s more like chronicling your transition from human to artificially enhanced cyborg. 🤖

Honestly, just glad to see you up and about and still posting. It wasn’t that long ago that a broken hip might have… well you know.

…plus a little ‘whining’ spread out across the WordPress masses probably helps keep the Missus from losing her mind! 🤣

Your last point is well taken, Greg. I think I’m testing the boundaries of her love for me at the moment.

I watch as little of the news as possible; it’s too depressing, especially politics.
And, Fandango, if you can’t whine to your friends, just who can you whine to? That’s what friends are for—among other things. 🙂

Heck of a way to distract yourself from politics. I don’t think your posts have been whiny though. Naturally once we knew what had happened to you readers would like to get the odd update on your progress in rehabl.

I will likely post, maybe once a week, about how my rehab is going, but I don’t want to have that be the dominant theme over the next few months.

Fandango, I am so sorry hear all of this having had a shitty January myself I have been out of touch with what was happening to other people. I’d say whine away if you want to. I must admit I do a lot of whining myself and then worry about it. But it does help having a good old whine. I hope February is a much better month for you.

I’m glad you’re home and recovering and eating good food and that January is behind you.

“I expect you’re getting tired of my whiney posts about poor Fandango and his broken hip. So I’m going to try to minimize such posts.”

Please don’t. Personally, I’m not tired of any posts and I don’t think your posts to date about your back or your hip have been “whiney”. You share parts of your life and I appreciate that. And it’s good to get things out.

As far as the political and societal bullshit during the last three weeks I can catch you up quickly: it’s all still bullshit!

Thanks, Michael. I’m glad you didn’t think my posts were whiny and I may periodically post updates on my progress. And when it comes to not keeping up with politics, that’s been about the only positive outcome.
