I spent much of my adult life in Dunkin’ Donuts country (aka Massachusetts). My idea of the perfect doughnut was forged by the variety of delicious treats that graced the shelves of my local Dunkin’ Donuts establishment.
I loved to stop at Dunkin’ Donuts on my way to work for a cup of hot coffee and a doughnut. But I admit that I’d rarely tasted any other establishment’s doughnuts, so I had little by way of comparison.
Around 20 years ago I was on a business trip in North Carolina. An associate of mine who lived in the area picked me up early one morning at the hotel and, as we were driving to the meeting, I asked him if he knew where the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts was.
He gave me a quizzical look because he was unfamiliar with Dunkin’ Donuts. “You want to stop and get a doughnut?” he asked. “There’s a Krispy Kreme near here. We can stop there.”
I’d never heard of Krispy Kreme before, but since I hadn’t had time for coffee or to eat anything before he picked me up, I agreed.
My world was rocked that morning. Never had I experienced anything as light and airy as a Krispy Kreme doughnut. It was like eating a sweet, delicious, glazed cloud.
Sorry Dunkin’. We had a good thing going, but your heavy, cakey doughnuts don’t cut it next to those incredibly delicious Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Especially when they’re fresh and hot from the cooker. Oh yum!
That said, the coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts is better than the coffee at Krispy Kreme. Sadly, where I live now in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme Doughnut stores are few and far between. But there are great cupcakes shops galore, so I’m surviving.

Dunkin’s donuts last longer than Krispy. The KK donuts are great when they are right off the shelf, but are inedible a few hours later whereas, although a bit stale, DDs are edible the next morning. Just saying. Krispy abandoned New England. They came, they were eaten, they left. Too much competition. Between DD and all the independent shops, it was probably a wise decision.

Yes, KK doughnuts are wicked good right out of the cooker. I once saw packaged KK doughnuts in a grocery store and they were very disappointing.

They are ONLY good when they are absolutely fresh. Also, kind of a bit greasy, at least for my stomach. I don’t digest fats well.

I think cookie shops and cupcake shops took over for donuts. They are not my cup of tea. Btw I grew up spelling it doughnuts, think it’s an east coast thing😂

Luckily there is an independent shop near me so I don’t have to eat the dreck that DD has become. they used to be truly good donuts, but now they are frozen shipped in and warmed up; yecch!

We have a fantastic krispy cream place just not far from here and you can go into the place and watch them come straight off the conveyor belt freshly Fried. When they 1st opened you could get 12 free for every other dozen that you bought. So now you had 24 doughnuts when you didn’t need one.

However you spell it, it’s gonna be one of many kinds of wonderful. We have a small bakery in Nordeast Mpls, MN called Sarah Jane’s, and for my money, their donuts/doughnuts/pastries are the best ever!

I used to like Dunkin’ and later I tried Krispy but now if I want a donut, I buy from a local store, Bonton. Excellent doughnuts

I made brownies with hashish — once, I think. I’m not totally happy with this new thc concentrate (often in cardboard edibles).

We have an Irish Maid donut shop where I live, and for my money, they’re much better than Dunkin’. And like others above wrote, KKs are only good fresh.

I find Krispy Kreme donuts to be too sweet so I’ve always preferred Dunkin. And yes, their coffee is definitely the best!

I still miss the popular donuts of my youth – Spudnuts, potato donuts. Either that or the homemade donut holes dad made on rare occasions shaken in a paper grocery sack with powdered sugar. Yum!
