WDP — Political Views

How have your political views changed over time?

I’ve always, ever since I was old enough to have formed political views, thought of myself as a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. And in both cases, I would have said my positions were moderate. Neither far left on the social side, nor far right on the fiscal side.

But my political views have, over the past two decades, shifted more to the left. It started with the 2000 presidential election when the conservative Supreme Court handed the presidency to the Republican candidate, George W. Bush, even though the Democratic candidate, Al Gore, had half a million more votes nationwide, than did George W. Bush.

But it was when the totally unqualified egomaniac, Donald Trump “won” the presidential election in 2016, even though the highly qualified Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, received three million more votes nationwide than did Trump, that I moved even further to the left.

And when Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, but claimed the election was stolen and, to this day, has yet to concede, and then orchestrated an insurrection to attempt to stay in office and to prevent Joe Biden from being officially declared the winner, that is when I moved very far to the left and lost my faith in politics in America.

So my political views in the past two decades have changed from one who believed in and supported the political process in America, to one who has lost all hope in that process.

It’s pretty hard to keep believing. We really need to see someone “up there” who is worth electing instead of very old people who even I think — and I’m old too! — are too old to do the job as it needs to be done — or total bums. I started out left, slid slightly to the middle, then went all the way left again.

The last two Republican American presidents, George W. Bush and Donald Trump, we’re not the highest caliber candidates. Especially Trump, who was totally unqualified. The candidates who often win, like Trump and all of his minions, are those who have the largest campaign funding and who can galvanize the stupidest and most naive, vile members of the electorate.

Sigh…….Yes, people don’t vote on common sense. This is why democracy is being eroded……..

Glad to know I’m one of “the stupidest, most naive, vile members of the electorate.” Do you believe divisiveness only comes from the right?

No, I don’t believe divisiveness ONLY comes from the right. But I do believe that those who support Donald Trump — the MAGA-maniacs who stormed the Capitol Building on Jan 6th and those who cheered them on, for example — are, in fact, among the stupidest, most naive, vile members of the electorate.

I looked this up, from Wikipedia, after the story I’ll include.

    Under: 2021 Buffalo mayoral election

The 2021 Buffalo mayoral election was held on November 2, 2021. Democratic Mayor Byron Brown won his fifth-term in office as a write-in candidate.[1] Brown’s victory marked the first time since 1985 that Buffalo did not elect the Democratic nominee for mayor.

Four-time incumbent Democratic Mayor Byron Brown lost the June Democratic primary to India Walton, a political activist and nurse. Brown chose to run in the general election as a write-in candidate, and then attempted to obtain ballot access, but continued as a write-in when he was unable to secure a place on the ballot. The race attracted national attention as a proxy battle between progressives and moderates with Walton running as a socialist, and Brown running with moderate Democratic as well as Republican support.[2] In addition to Brown, there were at least three other write-in candidates.

On the night of November 3, 2021, Brown declared his victory over Walton although tabulation of the write-in votes in Erie County (of which Buffalo is a part of) would not commence until November 17.[2] The day after the election, Walton released a statement stating that although a victory “seems unlikely,” her campaign would not concede until all votes were counted.[3] Brown’s victory became official on November 19, 2021.[1]

It’s a tough situation. Losing faith and not voting is just like voting for “the other guy.” Dropping out of political activism (to one degree or other) is like if Ukraine rolled over to Putin. If I live to be a thousand years old, I will always regard the Trump era as the turning point where we all saw the lowest common denominator win the day.

I agree with your assessment of the Trump era. I haven’t dropped out. I still vote, but with all the crap that’s going on, I’m not sure if it will do any good.

I don’t know if it’s too late to edit your opening post, Fandango. In the second paragraph: … shifted more to the left. It started with the 2020 presidential election when the conservative Supreme Court handed the presidency to the Republican candidate, George W. Bush…

No, it is not too late. I thought I had already changed that from 2020 to 2000, but I guess I didn’t. Thanks for letting me know.
