I don’t recognize my country anymore
The contrast from what it once was
To what it has become
Feels like an icicle stabbed into the kidney
A sharp pain
The lifeblood has been drained from
What was once a thing of beauty
Standing tall and proud
She is now more like a sapless tree
Bent and broken
Those of us who once loved her
Who were in awe of her
Are in a state of perpetual gloom
Feeling that our nation is beyond repair

I don’t think it is just the US though…in every corner of the earth there is an increase of upheaval, division, and without doubt growing dissatisfaction from people with regards to the authorities.
But I do think what happens in the US with regards to extreme ideas is scary because of the proliferation of guns and also the spread of some extreme ideas…what happens in the US does have an knock-on effect around the world.
The only thing that I have a big dislike of and I have always blamed the US for is mass commercialism. These huge chains that have devoured and destroyed…and the constant marketing and portrayal of a “lifestyle” people should aspire to and if necessary go into debt to acquire.
But my US friends, here and over the water – they are all so very lovable, and so good at talking about emotions – something I have always been drawn to.

I know these issues are not exclusive to the U.S., but the political divide here, with the radical far right and fundamentalist Christians push their agendas is destroying this country in a way I never imagined.

I admit that I was naïve concerning the breadth and depth what I consider America’s domestic enemies. Now I know.
