5 Things — Favorite Coffees

Dr. Tanya, over at Salted Caramel, has this prompt called “5 Things,” where she asks us to list five things about a particular topic. For this week’s topic, she’s asking about our five favorite kinds of coffees.

This is going to be hard for me because I’m a bit of a coffee purist. I don’t particularly care for flavored coffee. I prefer it black. Now some coffee purist may throw a flag on this, but I do add a packet of Splenda to sweeten it up a bit.

That said, I will very occasionally indulge in something a bit more, um, flavorful? Anyway, my five favorite ways I like coffee are:

  • Black with Splenda (probably 99% of the time)
  • Starbucks vanilla latte
  • Starbucks caramel macchiato
  • Kahlúa and Cream (Kahlúa is a coffee flavored liqueur. Does that count?)
  • Cappuccino (a shot of espresso with steamed milk)

    Double Chocolate coffee with milk
    Hazelnut Cocoa coffee with milk
    Cinnamon Vanilla coffee with
    Caramel Macchiato iced coffee,
plus iced mocha coffee… it’s gotta
be rich WHOLE milk, usually organic.
Only iced coffees are to be sweetened.
I will buy sweetened winter mint mocha.

I’ve weaned myself off of using straight cream, but the whole milk can’t barely qualify (as in a legal definition, to be cheap, and packaged in plastic). Real whole milk is fattier than what is usually marketed as whole — and any milk product keeps better in glass or paperboard/thin cardboard. I used to froth my milk, but haven’t lately. I think I’ll try that again tomorrow.

I recall as a teenager staying with a country cousin. They would take a container to the store to pick up milk. It was the best milk I ever had, almost straight from the cow.

On another subject, when my kids 🙃 were little, I traveled out to the countryside to buy goat milk (it has to be a certain kind of goat in order to taste the way we city folk expect milk to taste). Goat milk is considered more digestible, plus it wasn’t mechanically homogenized. I’d bet what your cousin’s family bought was (cows’ milk) non-homogenized, too.

I have never tried most of these. I used to love Vienna coffee, I remember it as being black coffee with whipped cream on top. You don’t really see it now. Mostly I’ll order a flat white or a cappuccino. I do like Tia Maria and Tiramisu though.
