Di, at Pensitivity101, is our host for Share Your World each week. Here are her questions for this week, which are mostly about Christmas traditions.
1. Do you have any family traditions?
We always try to get together for the holidays, gathering for dinners, parties, gift exchanges, etc., at various extended family members’ homes starting with Thanksgiving and running almost weekly through the end of the year.
2. With December on its way, have you ever been carol singing?
The last time I remember singing carols was when I was a member of the seventh grade chorus in junior high school and we performed at the school’s Christmas assembly.
3. Do you decorate your home for the Christmas holidays?
Nope. Never have, never will.
4. Do you enjoy the Christmas rush for preparations and shopping?
We do all of our holiday shopping online. My wife enjoys scouring the internet looking for unique, creative, imaginative, personal gifts. If I had my way, we’d get everyone gift cards or certificates so they could pick out anything they wanted or needed.
But to get to Di’s question, no, I don’t enjoy the Christmas rush. It has become so commercialized that for most, it’s all about material things, and less about it’s spiritual or religious context.
Gratitude question.
I’m grateful to have a wife who enjoys scouring the internet looking for unique, creative, imaginative, personal gifts so that I don’t have to.
It has become so commercialized that for most, it’s all about material things, and less about it’s spiritual or religious context.
Yes, sadly
I’m already putting in my order for easter eggs. They run out of pink so early. I also my local supermarket Easter bunny (don’t laugh). The manager is very happy as parents come in and buy lots of Easter goodies.

I’m not surprised.
having got a liking for Easter buns I went to replenish my supply the day after. None. All gone. What nerve!
Then again last Christmas I asked the checkout girl where the Easter eggs were and she looked blank at me. Probably thought silly old git……😜

I read that the supermarkets could not sell them until at least January…………. and none could be sold cheaply after Easter!!! Something about Easter Egg chocolate.

You are right Fandango. Christmas is too commercialized and the true spirit is lost. I have had my share of things only being appreciated by cost. Now it’s hand made cards in the post to friends and family (usually the only contact with the latter), hand delivered cards to our neighbours and friends on the estate, and gifts for our two closest neighbours who have become friends. Plus our £10 which is done mostly in charity shops, so we don’t get caught up in making profits for others.

I hate the rush! And commercialization hardly begins to cover it. I think it’s sad, really. Back when when we were younger, Christmas had the “seeds” of commercialization, but now, whatever else was part of it has been buried under piles of STUFF.

I know. The only thing holy about Christmas anymore is the almighty dollar.

I am a giver by nature and love to find just the right gift to bring a smile to the faces of my family. Growing up in a family that was not fond of churches and their need for money all the time we have always focused on giving and togetherness. I have heard more than once Jesus was born in the summer anyway. Most of the traditions come from sources other than Christianity too. In spite of your lack of enthusiasm for the holiday, I hope you had a good one.
