Our states were supposed to be united
It was intended as a reliable compromise
Between local and federal rights
By the prominent fathers who were our founders
But then someone cooked the books on us
A visitor from the tall tower has torn us asunder
What was once united
Is now extremely divided
United we stood strong
Divided we are hopelessly falling

I blame Trump for all the troubles that we are in now.

I agree with Jim. Things were way better before DT

I blame Trump, but I also blame his enablers and those who were in a position to stop him, like Mitch McConnell, but chose not to.

I think it will backfire on the Dems.

Not to the same extent but we are heading in the same direction north of the border. Sadly, the Trump effect has spread across the globe faster than COVID from a Wuhan laboratory.
On an editing note, I think you have an extra “was” in line 7.

Thank for the extra “was” note. I fixed it. I just wish fixing what is going on political in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere would be just as easy.

I think that our initial compromise – legally adding slavery to our original constitution – was the beginning of the downfall. I have come during the past five or six years to believe that “the lesser of two evils” isn’t better. It’s still evil and if you embrace it, it will kill you down the line.

😥 Yeah, it’s looking like we’re quite hopeless.

And I think it’s entirely possible we did it to ourselves. Isn’t it ironic that slavery was the hottest topic at the original constitutional convention and was the “untouchable issue” until it became Jim Crow and was STILL untouchable. And still is. There is no lesser evil. This is good. There is evil. Lesser evil is an oxymoron.

Yep! Agreed! The US is definitely not somewhere I’d like to be living at the moment!

I feel this. I’m reminded of a poem I wrote some time ago https://jewishyoungprofessional.wordpress.com/2021/09/29/american-pie/

Yes, I can see the similarities in the underlying message. Well done.
