Would you still have any [COVID] booster jabs offered to you or do you think they are now ineffective?
I’ve had five jabs so far, including the two initial ones and three boosters. I just read an article on the front page in this morning’s newspaper:
The article speaks about how concern is rapidly growing over emerging omicron coronavirus variants that experts say appear to be strong candidates for a winter surge in the U.S. So in spite of the naïve belief by some that COVID is no longer a threat, I think it, just like the flu, with its variants, is here to stay.
I get an annual flu shot, so why wouldn’t I get at least an annual COVID shot? Hence, to answer Di’s question, yes, I will still avail myself of any COVID booster shots that are available. Why wouldn’t I?

Same as you. I get every vaccine available to me and am happy to do it. I skipped one year, got the flu, and was utterly miserable. Dunno why some people are so weird about this topic!

They took their cue from our former president. Just think how different things would be if he didn’t call COVID a hoax and encouraged his followers to wear masks, social distance, and get vaccinated instead of ridiculing all of that.

Yes it puzzles me too Paula. When at school we all used to line up , bare arms out, while the nurse came along jab jab jab. It was the done thing. Accepted.
Maybe today free speech, social media etc have become ‘so important’ people take advantage of it to wave their own flag. Dunno……

I still need last booster but it’s a couple more weeks. Got the flu shot a month ago. I also have had the Shingles vaccine shots.

I wonder if I’m going to be less vigilant on keeping up to date on the lies being spread in the name of science. The details are interesting, so I’d bet I will still look into it going forward. As to my well-being, I’ll use my own reasoning like an adult who had a good education instead of trying to follow the bouncing laser beam point (when I’ve already gathered the jig). These vaccines don’t confer herd immunity. Therefore (at minimum), they are different from what I went to the doctor for as a little child or infant or got with my peers in school.
Since I had “Covid-19” (or Covid-2022) this past late August, I’m as boosted so-to-speak as is available [and even better due to the fact immunity is not only about raising antibody titers, plus… antibodies can tick actually downward with too many shots]. The newest booster shots are based on BA1 studies plus assumptions (hoping to aim at BA5). I most likely had the escaped BA5, possibly had whatever has newly been isolated (BQ1…) in Berkeley. And they’re saying the new variants are yet more likely to “escape” the dream being chased?
I don’t know, yet, if I will get boosted on something like a yearly basis (or whenever a well-studied booster comes up) if I haven’t recently been infected and gained immunity that way for a while. If I were an immunocompromised person in some other way or a person with a pre-existing comorbidity like heart disease or were over 65, I might have looked at this differently and made a decision that wouldn’t budge for nothing. There is the ever-present risk-benefit analysis to consider; the way it (science) always worked before this.

Other US developments
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revoked the emergency use authorization for the investigational monoclonal antibody therapy bamlanivimab for use alone to treat mild to moderate COVID-19. The potential benefits of the therapy no longer outweigh the risks, because of a rise in resistant variants, the FDA said.

Besides new variants developing on their own, whereby they tend to become less deadly even if more contagious, some people with access to a lab got busy in making something that wouldn’t have happened in nature; a new Boston virus isn’t just a rumor… but hasn’t been physically leaked.

Dokholyan and other researchers are working on a vaccine that would cover future variants, possibly eliminating the need for additional boosters. He said the new design is based on a different part of the virus than existing vaccines: “Some positions on proteins that must remain intact or unchanged,” he said.
Those parts are less likely to mutate in new variants, meaning it would be harder for the virus to avoid a vaccine aimed at those areas.

The next step in the research is to test this design in primates, but this technology goes far beyond COVID. Dokholyan said if this design is successful, it could be used to protect against many more diseases, maybe even cancer.
“You can imagine there are many untreatable viral diseases that exist, and this kind of approach allows you to rapidly develop the vaccine,” Dokholyan said.

I’ll get it if they offer I’ve had them all so far plus delta and omicron. The symptoms weren’t devastating in any so I think the vaccines did their job

I have a friend who said many months ago that Covid would be the new “flu” with different strains coming every fall and winter requiring yearly shots at least. It is looking more and more like that will be true.
