I Hate My Power Company

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is my electric and gas utility company. There was an electrical outage in our area on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, our whole house generator that we bought two years ago for just that purpose crapped out on us, leaving us without electricity and AC for four hours until the power was restored. I wrote about this here in response to Paula Light’s The Monday Peeve prompt.

Today, at 2:30 pm, the electricity went off again. And our generator has not yet been fixed. The good news was that by 4:00 on this very hot day, power was restored.

Can you guess what happened 45 minutes later? Yep, the power went out again. It’s now after 8 pm my time, more than three hours since today’s second outage, and there’s still no word on when we can expect power to come back on.

So three power outages in three days! When did Northern California turn into a third world country that can’t even provide reliable electricity to its residents?

I’m pissed.

    Are any of these outages deliberate, preventative as a result of heat or wiind and red flag warnings? I think I’d rather have the inconvenience of an outage than be done in by a brushfire!

      No. If they have a planned outage, we get advance notice. These were not planned or preventative.

    Hard to click “Like” for this news. Sorry. Our Generac kicks in every Sunday AM for a 10 minute test run & hasn’t failed us yet (4 years, many outages, one of which was 9 hours in mid-winter, sub-zero). Aaron’s coming out next week for annual maintenance. Hope things turn around for you soon.

      Yeah, I’m pissed that mine failed after less than two years. I hope the new control board will fix the problem, as we’re bound to have more outages in the coming months.

    I’m going to hazard an answer, as to when. Emphasizing private (or even so called public-private) and deregulated (even reduced regulation) services to citizens are about profit (every penny they can get — not simply a profit). Needed upgrades are less likely to happen. That’s what our country calls conservative.

    I feel for you Fan but everything needs a break every now and again…….

    My logic not stacking up?……..

    We lose power (unplanned) so often. I am so thankful we have a generator. Fortunately, my husband can usually get it running if it fails to start automatically. Long periods of time with no power are certainly maddening. I would be angry, too.

      We have a generator, too, which is great when it kicks in and stays on. I tried starting it manually when it didn’t start automatically, but it sputtered out after a few minutes. 🙁

    I’ve had my own battles with PG&E. I even tried to get the town council involved in my dispute – which involved an easement property next door to us. Maddening experience.

    Our government is assuring us there will be no outages in the winter and to use as much electricity s we want. Pfft! At what they’re charging now, people are cutting back to save money, not energy.
    Look at it this way Fandango, while the power is out, you aren’t being charged for usage.
    If we have a cut here, we are still charged a daily service fee regardless of delivery!

    I think we are ALL pissed at our power utilities. They totally suck. Ours has made it practically impossible to use one of the all-green electric services because they are charging (are you ready?) $180 on top of the price you pay for being connected to National Grid. So the price for electricity was $217 AND they charged an extra $180 for “connection fees.” They just finished paying off a lot of money for overcharging millions of customers, so they’ve found A NEW WAY to overcharge us.

      Yes, the “outrage” was finally resolved at around 9:30 last night. I’m wondering how long before the next “outrage.”

    That is one of the reasons I question how reliable electric cars can be when the electric companies can supply the demand already. Hope you have your generator fixed now!
