#WDYS — Storm Warnings

The storm clouds had been gathering
For quite some time now
The seas were getting rougher
We were heading toward disaster
Our boat was about to capsize
A strong gust of wind
Picked me up and threw me overboard
Into the dark, frigid waters
You made no effort to save me
You left me to sink or swim
I felt like I was drowning
And after I thrust my hand up
For the third time
I knew that it was over for me
I would sink to a watery grave
Our life together abruptly ended

Then I woke from my nightmare and decided to call my lawyer.

Blogging Insights — Let’s Talk

It’s Monday and Dr. Tanya is back with her weekly Blogging Insights prompt. She provides us with a quote about blogging or writing and asks us to express our opinion about said quote.

This week’s quote is from blogger, journalist, and author Cory Doctorow.

Conversation is king. Content is just something to talk about.

When I read the quote Tanya highlighted today, the first thing I thought about was that song from Jesus Christ Superstar that starts out with the line “What’s the buzz, tell me what’s a-happening?”

It seems to me that, in his quote, Doctorow is suggesting that the content of your writing is less important than the “buzz” it generates. Conversation being king may be great for late-night talk shows hosts, but when it comes to blogging, I couldn’t disagree more.

When I started my blog, it was a vehicle for self expression, a way for me to put my thoughts, opinions, and perspectives in writing. As I got into writing flash fiction, it was a means to flex my imagination and to hone my writing skills. I never expected to attract much of an audience for my writing. That there are those who read and comment on what I write is a bonus, one that makes blogging that much more worthwhile as a pastime.

That said, I think content is king and if the content generates conversation (i.e., buzz), so much the better. If you truly believe that conversation is king, then you must consider what you write to be little more than clickbait, and were the name “Buzzfeed” not already taken, that’s what you should name your blog.

That’s my opinion and I’m sticking with it, so let’s get this conversation going, shall we?

Share Your World — 08/15/2022

Share Your World

Di, at Pensitivity101, is once again filling in for Melanie, at Sparks From a Combustible Mind, for this week’s Share Your World prompt. Thanks, Di.

1. Do you prefer to live in a single story property like a bungalow, a high rise apartment, or a house?

Ours is a single story house commonly referred to where we live as a ranch-style home. I like it because there are no stairs to have to walk up and down every day. And being septuagenarians, not having to deal with steps is good!

2. If you won a large amount of money on the lottery, would you want publicity or keep things quiet and low key?

I’d definitely keep it on the down low. Only my immediate family would be in the loop.

3. How do you like your eggs? (No, this is not a trick question.)

  • Over easy
  • Scrambled with mushrooms, sautéed onions, diced tomato, and cheese melted on top
  • “Hole in the wall” eggs (essentially over easy, but with the eggs dropped into a small hole in the centers of slices of bread)

4. If cars were no longer available, what would be your choice of transport?

Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge #181

Welcome to Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge. Each week I will be posting a photo I grab off the internet and challenging bloggers to write a flash fiction piece or a poem inspired by the photo. There are no style or word limits.

The image below is from Pexels.com.

For the visually challenged writer, the photo shows a woman standing on a stone dock by a lake tossing morsels of food into the air. She’s surrounded on the dock, in the air, and on the water, by various birds and waterfowl going after the food.

If this week’s image inspires you and you wish to participate, please write your post, use the tag #FFFC, and link back to this post. I hope it will generate some great posts.

FOWC with Fandango — Personality

It’s August 15, 2022. Welcome to Fandango’s One-Word Challenge (aka, FOWC). I will be posting each day’s word just after midnight Pacific Time (U.S.).

Today’s word is “personality.”

Write a post using that word. It can be prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction. It can be any length. It can be just a picture or a drawing if you want. No holds barred, so to speak.

Once you are done, tag your post with #FOWC and create a pingback to this post if you are on WordPress. Please check to confirm that your pingback is there. If not, please manually add your link in the comments.

And be sure to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this prompt. Show them some love.
