Rory’s Roaring Again

Rory is roaring back on his new blog with some of his patented teasing and tempting questions. So let’s get right to it.

Where and what does the phrase ‘Mad as a box of frogs’ originate from and mean?

I have never heard that expression before. I’ve heard “mad as a hatter” and “mad as a wet hen,” but never “mad as a box of frogs.” But I can imagine that if you put a bunch of frogs that have been stuffed into a box, they’d be pretty damn mad.

At what age do you think you would clearly recognize a ‘much younger version of you’ if you bumped into YOU on the street today?

I’ve had a beard ever since I was thirty, so if I saw a younger me who was not yet thirty, I very well might not recognize him.

How would you react if you woke up one morning next to a headless horse?

I would probably think I’d somehow fallen asleep on the movie set of “The Godfather” and had woken up during the filming of that famous scene, but with the rest of the horse.

What country would you most like to visit if you were a rabbit and why?

If I were a rabbit I don’t think I’d know the concept of a “country.” I think I’d just want to live in an underground warren in a lovely meadow with all of the other rabbits, whatever country it is in.

When did time actually begin and if you are not sure well then make something up!

Some may argue that time either always existed or began at the occurrence of The Big Bang. But to other than human beings, the measurement of time means nothing. No other species besides human beings understand or care about seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, or centuries. Your dog doesn’t know or care how many hours it’s been since his last meal. Only whether he’s hungry or not.

Since the concept of time is a human construct, time, particularly the measurement of time, is a relatively recent phenomenon. It most likely began with the invention of sundials in ancient Egypt sometime between 2000 and 1500 B.C. Initially, the basic unit of time was the period of daylight. The Egyptians broke that period from sunrise to sunset into twelve equal parts, which became the forerunner to the contemporary concept of hours.

How often do you forget what you just said?

I can’t remember.

Who would you rather be Casper the Friendly Ghost or Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost and why?

I’ve never heard of Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost. Just Casper the Friendly Ghost. But since I don’t believe in ghosts of any kind, I’d rather just be dead and rest in peace.

Which came first, the banana or the orange or yellow and orange the colors?

Like time, language is a human construct, so I’m sure bananas and oranges existed before humans came up with the names for those fruits or the names of the colors for them.

Are we actually living our best lives?

I think we each strive to live our best lives, but for many of us, life often gets in the way of living our best life.

Do you think we owe the world our life, the world owes us our life, or we owe it to ourselves to live life? [Interpret as you wish]

I strive to remain debt free. So I owe no one anything and no one owes me anything. Certainly the world doesn’t owe me anything. And what I owe to the world is to be as environmentally conscious as I can and to support and vote for candidates who will be serious about fighting climate change.

Excellent answers Fandango, many were delightfully probed into and given good thought to. You handled the time well. This was a question that was raised last week when l was working at the reserve and someone threw in a wild comment of ‘Time existed only from the moment of the big Bang!” This tickled me somewhat as l thought literally, what a very human response!

    Great answers indeedy.

Many thanks for taking part 🙂

I think I would recognize myself at any age after, like, a year old. However, if “I” were dressed or presented very differently (like with very short hair and maybe with very boyish clothes too), I suppose that could be anywhere from more difficult to easily missed. But if the viewing-I were presented with a group of people and asked to pick my viewee-self out, that would not be too challenging.

Time exists, whether we measure it or not. And if “I” looked like my five-year-old self one moment and my one-year-old self the next, there would be something very wrong with the universe* (or my mind in perceiving someone or the world around my seeing self). Color is on a spectrum with light, so yellow and so forth came before foliage of any hue. Time is a most profound question.

We are not living our best life. It would be better if most land (and habitats with trees and so forth) and water were in a more natural state and accessible to all (all not criminal and incarcerated) people. It’s wrong that land was taken away from native Americans because they tended toward sharing the land, and migration. We theoretically “make the best of it” as things are. But no.

If I woke up with said horse in my bed, I would know a sense of social contract was over on both a county/government and personal level. This would be a state of anarchy (or libertarianism) and I would wonder how the new reality is to be navigated.+ How difficult is it, then, to gain personal body guards. What can I do to see to the well-surviving of all the people of my closest family/friends.

In fact, we would gather together.[1] The men would tend to be the body guards. With Republicans, over the last greater than seven years talking more and more of civil war, my sons have developed larger interests in practicing with firearms. One has tried to convince me I should buy a gun, but I say I’m not interested in having or owning any gun. (Nevertheless, I am pro-2nd amendment.)

I never forget what I just said. But I used to remember everything I said (and others said in personal settings) over all my age of awareness (plus). Things are starting to get a little hazy. My memory is now more like what it has always seemed is how other people’s memories work and always worked. I wouldn’t want to be either ghost and don’t see why anyone would want ghosts in life.

Owe? I used to think people had an understanding of wanting the best for each other. I existed in a number of environments where that does seem to have been the case. This has been sorely tried, nearly to cynicism. Some people are so into their own neuroses and psychoses or simply lies that a preservation of self-perception trumps anything else going on. We live we die.

Perhaps, I would recommend… living more Jewishly (liberal Judaism), where it is common or very expected to have prenuptial and community expectations for marriage. Otherwise, it’s a total crap shoot. It does work out nicely for some people, but that’s sort of like the roulette wheel; some people win. In the world, there are different aspects of life that can be better and worse.

Okay, I’m going to go a little beyond, now. Since our society has removed — and continues removing such as in tearing or burning down rainforests and polluting islands — the ability to forage and hunt and fish for ourselves on a normal basis, jobs should be assured to provide enough support for a living. Otherwise, we are fine with near slavery by another name. And we pretty much are in the U.S.

*This is just saying reality does not work that way.

+In truth, I already wonder about this; as previewed
when I said I don’t know what the police are really for.
I’m additionally unsure what attorneys are generally for.

Some governing stands as almost tumbleweed. Obtaining
a property and paying its taxes, the new record showing me
as the owner didn’t get recorded until more than half a year on.

1Might be hyperbole; I’d actually probably call local police, hoping.

I’ve decided to play along. I’d rather be the friendly ghost.
