Cellpic Sunday — 08/07/22

John Steiner, the blogger behind Journeys With Johnbo, has this prompt he calls Cellpic Sunday in which he asks us to post a photo that was taken with a cellphone, tablet, or another mobile device. I thought this might be fun so I decided to join in.

I took this photo the other day. I went out to my backyard and saw this big fellow crawling across the patio. I grabbed my iPhone and took this photo as he slowly meandered across the patio. This guy was about five inches long, not including his legs!

I have since learned that the area I live in, just northwest of Mt. Diablo, is a hotbed for tarantula spiders. This was the first one I saw “in the wild” since moving here two years ago, but with a lot of development encroaching on their natural habitat, I can expect to see more and more of these critters around my home.

The good news is that these ugly monster spiders are docile and are not poisonous. So while they look like they came right out of a horror movie, they are harmless. As long as they stay outside, they are welcome to wander around my yard.

If you wish to participate in this fun cellphone photo prompt, please click on the link to John’s post at the top of my post to see his photo and to read his instructions.

Oofah! Ever see spider cricket? They’re creepy, ugly, huge and like to hang out in my garage. I’m getting the creepy-crawlies just thinking about them!

I’ve seen spiders and crickets, but never a spider cricket. Do they chirp like crickets and build webs like spiders?

They look like the creature from Alien so I haven’t gotten close enough to know if they chirp and/or spin. They creep me out big time! Now, if they looked like the alien that jumped out of John Hurt’s stomach in “Space Balls”, I’d open my garage to the public and charge admission to the show! 🤣

I didn’t know there’s a place in California high in population density of tarantulas. Very interesting.

I understand. Seeing a huge tarantula on my back patio freaked me out.

It was an eye-opener when first seen to discover these were harmless and could crawl all over you…..

Harmless, yes. Crawl all over me? I’ll take a hard pass on that.

I’ve seen pics of them crawling over people. Despite being harmless they’re monsters. Even the name ‘tarantula’ is evil..

We don’t have any down here. Instead we have venomous redback and funnelwebs……

If I was you… that would be about the time to pack up and leave the house behind. I do not like creepy crawlies!
