It Ain’t Over Yet

I got this article on my iPhone’s newsfeed this morning:

The article pointed out that there’s been an upturn in new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in the Bay Area as new COVID-19 infections in the region have risen 167% in the same month that saw the state dropping most mitigation measures, including vaccine verification and mask requirements for schools and public transit.

Do you think we might have jumped the gun by easing mask mandates and vaccination certifications? I do, but I’m apparently one of those stubborn “woke” individuals who still wears my mask in public places and who avoids coming in close contact with anyone who isn’t masked.

I got my second COVID booster shot yesterday, and other than a bit of a sore arm, I’ve suffered no adverse effects. I don’t expect this booster to completely protect me from being infected by COVID, but I do expect being fully vaccinated will significantly reduce the potential for me to become severely ill or having to be hospitalized.

Normally I would say that, if you are not vaccinated and/or refuse to wear a mask, “hey, whatever floats your boat.” But if your boat is responsible for causing other people’s boats to capsize, I think you need to think again.

So if you still aren’t vaccinated or you refuse to wear a face mask in public places, I believe you are guilty of perpetuating this highly contagious disease.

I’m with you Fandango. Our town is awash with holidaymakers and not a mask between them. We get funny looks wearing them into shops, yet many have signs up asking you to.

I’ve not had COVID (yet) but with restrictions easing in schools in the UK as well, I’m not sure how long that will last. We have to pay for lateral flow tests now, luckily I still have some boxes spare if I do go and see family, or friends I wouldn’t normally see.

We both got our second covid boosters. Garry had almost no reaction, I collapsed — for one awful day. But just one day.

I don’t wear a mask most of the time, but this is a small town and it is almost never crowded anywhere. If we lived closer to Boston, we might change our minds. I did buy a box of N95 masks because we have to fly for that, I think I’d wear a hazmat suit if I could.

The company’s Covid-19 vaccine would be the first authorized in the U.S. with a traditional protein-based platform, used for decades to inoculate against diseases such as hepatitis B and shingles.

It sends a version of the coronavirus spike protein to stimulate the body’s immune response. That is different from the market-dominating Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines… [and different from J&J…]

Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine uses a modified version of an adenovirus, the virus behind many common colds, to deliver genetic instructions to cells.

Kayb Joseph, a 47-year-old Chattanooga, Tenn., resident, said she has checked every two weeks for news on Novavax’s vaccine and would drive to the company’s Maryland headquarters to get it if needed. She prefers its protein-based platform.

      “I just don’t believe in being somebody’s R&D,” she said. …

I have to wonder, when somone says this kind of thing on a separate area of interest (let’s say abortion), why the sentiment “doesn’t” (logically) apply to the topic at hand. I don’t agree with it, by the way:

As if the planet needs more humans! We are already over-populated and in some places there are already food and water scarcities, sure to spread even to the U.S. in the coming years. Oh yeah, let’s add more humans so that they can put more CO2 into the atmosphere and hasten the demise of nearly every species on the planet. Sigh.

It seems to me that whether we’re talking about women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, civil rights, education, books, healthcare or any myriad of topics, the Republican Party is the party of “NO”. If it helps people, helps secure a future, then their answer is “NO”. [But boo to new humans. Deal my my CO2 but not somebody else’s. And suffocate kids.]

My personal health situation after my second shot [not the first shot] is worse than after — or even for the most part but with a couple exceptions during — my recovery from Covid-19 itself (which I fully overcame with no medication or vaccine in March of 2020. Two things that were odd during the infection (not even lasting more than a week) were the loss of smell and the appearance of a bruise (which can’t have been a bruise in the usual sense) on one eye.

There’s a lot interesting in this article. I’ve chosen this little piece as an appetizer, perhaps out of gallows humor. We haven’t made mistakes? I guess the quoted person meant waiting for an individual to make a mistake to which he or she succumbs. I’m sure mistakes are involved, but there is also the fact that the new variants get more and more easily spread — while they’re not as deadly in and of themselves and at-risk people have been vaccinated if they want to be (although vaccination doesn’t seem to apply much to the new strains).

COVID-19 cases are rising sharply again — should we worry?

“COVID-19 is not done with us,” Mokdad said. “It’s just waiting for us to make a mistake.”

At the World Health Assembly, next week [starting tomorrow and leaving out Taiwan], the WHO will meet to discuss a “pandemic accord” that would … expand its powers.

The European Union… pushed for a legally-binding pandemic “treaty” instead…. despite the WHO’s own figures showing little correlation…

If something can’t be underwritten rationally, then what is the purpose …… of a plan that “skates around WHO’s errors during the Covid pandemic [including ignoring Taiwan’s early warmings?]”

Since the British handed over Hong Kong to China in 1997, the city has been governed under a “one country, two systems” framework that gives it freedoms not found on the mainland, including freedom of speech and assembly. It meant Hong Kong and nearby Macao, the other semi-autonomous territory, were allowed to commemorate the 1989 crackdown. Elsewhere in China, keywords such as “Tiananmen massacre” and “June 4” are strictly censored online, and people are not allowed to publicly mark the event.

Outside China, vigils were held to remember the Tiananmen victims.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said even though Chin[a] and Hong Kong were attempting to suppress the memories of the crackdown, his government would continue to speak out and promote accountability on human rights abuses by China, including those in Hong Kong, against Muslim minorities in the western Xinjiang region as well as Tibet.

“To the people of China and to those who continue to stand against injustice and seek freedom, we will not forget June 4,” he said.

In Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing as part of its territory, the Foreign Ministry wrote on Facebook that “when this time of year comes around, there is a lot one can’t say, a lot one can’t write, and a lot one can’t even look up on the internet.”

Two Senate Democratic leaders say they are willing to give Republicans a vote on reversing President Joe Biden’s move to end pandemic-era border restrictions, provided that the GOP then agrees to move [which does not mean pass] a stalled $10 billion coronavirus aid deal.

It’s a notable shift in Democratic strategy, weeks after the Covid aid package was sidetracked amid Republican demands for an amendment vote on Biden’s decision to lift the public health-related border restrictions.

Now that a $40 billion Ukraine aid package is moving without the Covid funding boost that they’d hoped to pair it with, Senate Democrats are warming to the idea of letting Republicans have a vote on immigration if that’s what it takes to prepare the United States for a fall coronavirus surge.

… vaccinated people who got so-called breakthrough infections carried about the same amount of the coronavirus as those who did not get the shots.

Health officials on Friday released details of that research, which was key in this week’s decision by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend that vaccinated people return to wearing masks indoors in parts of the U.S. where the delta variant is fueling infection surges. The authors said the findings suggest that the CDC’s mask guidance should be expanded to include the entire country, even outside of hot spots.

The findings have the potential to upend past thinking about how the disease is spread. Previously, vaccinated people who got infected were thought to have low levels of virus and to be unlikely to pass it to others.

Two weeks ago, with no outcomes data on COVID-19 booster shots for 5-to-11-year-olds, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) vigorously recommended the booster for all 24 million American children in that age group. The CDC cited a small Pfizer study of 140 children that showed boosters elevated their antibody levels—an outcome known to be transitory.

When that study concluded, a Pfizer spokesperson said it did not determine the efficacy of the booster in the 5-to-11-year-olds. But that didn’t matter to the CDC.

Ryan Grim and Robby Soave discuss the Monkeypox virus and its cases around the world, including new U.S. cases, as well as Bill Gates’ predictions for the next pandemic.

    ……

Reporting by Forbes alleges there is not a lot of evidence to support the claims against Bill Gates … Some people have pointed to Gates’ previous comments urging the world to be more prepared about possible bioterrorist smallpox attacks.

According to Bill Gates, “movies like Outbreak nailed it when they imagined a global disease-fighting team who is ready to respond to a crisis on a moment’s notice. Now we need to make it a reality.”

This 1997 image provided by the CDC during an investigation into an outbreak of monkeypox, which took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formerly Zaire, and depicts the dorsal surfaces of the hands of a monkeypox case patient, who was displaying the appearance of the characteristic rash during its recuperative stage. As more cases of monkeypox are detected in Europe and North America in 2022, some scientists who have monitored numerous outbreaks in Africa say they are baffled by the unusual disease’s spread in developed countries. (CDC via AP)

Bill Gates is the fella who said it’s unfortunate that the omicron variant (or variations) turned out better at inoculating people than the vaccines did. (I’ve shared video of him saying that months ago.)

Failure of government (late stage capitalism dominating policy) is what continues.

I contracted Covid-19 very early on, because I came in contact with someone from New York (who frequently travels) in a world-class symphony hall. I had already determined that if I were exposed I would simply stay home and wait for any possible infection to pass (I didn’t want to go any place where it would be likely I’d come onto contact with more disease); there was nothing available to help in March of 2020 anyway. WORSE: We didn’t even have tests available in the United States, for the most part (although there was a test in existence which the federal administration [that is Trump] rejected). I found out about tests not being available for Covid-19 in early 2020 because one of my sons thought he might have been exposed at a concert surrounded by beer and sweat. He followed his doctor’s instructions — as well as the wishes of his prestigious workplace who would pay for anything necessary — on where to go to receive a test. He went, but the venue refused to administer a test and told him to “come back when you’re on your death bed.” Now, early in 2022, while corporate health officials still wanted schools shut down (despite no shown benefit), the same vocal people did not want to make a public statement (not even a rule) that people shouldn’t go to sex parties due to the spread of monkeypox via these settings. We have made money the most important thing, rich people and their greater riches in particular.
