“I thought you knew everyone who was invited to this fundraiser,” Jon said to his wife.
“Are we at the right place?“ Jon asked. “Could you have gotten the address wrong? Or maybe you got the wrong date. It can be easy to accidentally juxtapose some numbers.”
Maria gave Jon a caustic look. “I am extremely diligent when it comes to such details. This is definitely the right address. I’m the guy’s assistant campaign manager. I know where he’s going to be when he’s on the stump, for crissake.”
“Why don’t you ask someone if we’re in the right place?” Jon suggested. Maria nodded, walked off, and spoke with someone. As she was walking back to Jon, Maria’s face was red and Jon couldn’t tell from her expression if she was about to burst out crying or laughing. “Well?” he asked.
“I’m trying to absorb the reality of what’s happening,” Maria said. “It’s the right date, the right time, and the right address.”
“So what’s the problem,” Jon asked.
“Wrong town,” she said. “The fundraiser was in South Binghamton and we’re in West Binghamton.”
Jon started to laugh. “You’re shitting me! Then who’s event is this?”
Maria started laughing, too. “This is some random couple’s engagement party.”
“That explains a lot,” Jon said, laughing. “Let’s get the hell out of here.”
“Absolutely,” Maria agreed. “I think we can still make an appearance at the fundraiser if we hurry.”
