I’ve put a lot of effort (and money) into landscaping my backyard. But I have a mole problem and there are mole holes dotting my yard. In the past I’ve had a company come out to fix my mole problem, but that solution entailed setting traps that killed the moles. That didn’t bother me, but it did bother my wife, who has challenged me to come up with a more “humane” way of getting rid of the moles.
I did some research and came across a product that doesn’t kill moles but allegedly does drive them away. I found these on Amazon. They are advertised to safely and humanely rid your yard of moles, which would make my wife happy.
According to the product materials, this solar mole repellent uses vibration pulses to drive moles away, without the use of chemical agents or poisons. Thus, they are environmentally friendly, safe, and effective. Yay! The solar mouse repellent stakes emit vibration pulses into the ground for 3-4 seconds every 30 seconds at a frequency that supposedly annoys or frightens moles to the point that they leave the area.
Total bullshit! The moles in my backyard seem to be attracted to, rather than repelled by, whatever vibrations these devices are giving off, because I have more mole holes in my backyard now than I did before I stuck these stakes in the ground. The photo below shows a new mole hole I discovered yesterday about a foot to the left of the solar stake.
So it’s back to the drawing board and the ultimate question. Do I set lethal traps to rid my yard of these landscape destroying critters or just let them, as my wife wants, have free rein to do their thing?
I have a neighbor who put these in and was wondering if they worked.

I don’t know if they worked for your neighbor, but they sure aren’t working for me.

Do the stakes scare off gophers?

They are supposed to work for moles, voles, and gophers, but my moles don’t seem to be moved by them.

Hubby used to do pest control and is a qualified mole catcher. Mole breeding season is March to May and a single mole can eat around 200 worms a day or 70 -100% of their bodyweight.
Could be you’ve only got one mole and he’s just busy. The thing with vibrations is they won’t go down that particular tunnel, but will by-pass it. Fascinating little creatures, but they can be a pest.

Personally, for someone who is supposed worried about the environment, you are being a bit of a dick. Just saying.

Well, if I lived in the sticks, surrounded by woods and uncultivated land, I might not care about moles and gophers tearing up my yard, but living in the burbs and having invested heavily in creating a beautiful backyard, I’m none to happy about having these rodent-like critters destroying my backyard sanctuary.

There are recipes for Dawn soap and other natural things to spray your yard. We tried lots of things and they always seem to find their way back

We have those things for snake repellent. I don’t know if they work but I haven’t seen a snake all summer. I think they have them for repelling wildlife too. I looked into it because we had a lot of plants eaten by wallabies and possums. I think it would be easier just to fence of the plants for us though. We love watching the possums at night anyway. Of course, they don’t dig holes although bandicoots do, we don’t seem to have those.
I have to say that I am with your wife on this one. I wouldn’t like to see the moles killed just for being moles. I don’t know what the answer is. Of course, nobody was going to tell you they were a problem when you bought the house. If so, you might have gone for a different kind of landscaping. Yes, it is annoying that you spent a lot of money on your garden but the animals have less and less habitat as the suburbs encroach. What are they supposed to do?

Have you tried signs or that plastic tape that gets used to keep people away from things that works so well it amazed me 😂 I am with your wife. After a while they go elsewhere and you can go back to humanising your yard

Next I’m going to try caster oil and dishwashing liquid. Google says that moles don’t like that.

Maybe throw in a few plates and cutlery and they might do the washing up as well 😂

Why didn’t I think of that? 🧐

I think you should start considering setting up a profitable operation, such as convincing the neighborhood children that moles make great pets or setting up a mole fighting ring… though the latter doesn’t sound too humane…
