WordPress Speaks with Forked Tongue

I’m really getting confused and frustrated with WordPress. I was delighted this morning when I read Jim Adams’ post, in which he wrote that he had contacted WordPress about the alleged elimination of the Personal, Premium, Business, and eCommerce plans. Jim said, “They wrote back to me and said that the Personal, Premium, Business, and eCom plans are not being discontinued. The Pro plan has been introduced in addition to these plans and is currently only available for the FREE sites.”

Great news, huh?

But wait. Yesterday I opened a help ticket asking if the rumors circulating about the plan changes were true. I got this response below just a few minutes ago.

Huh? So which is it, WordPress? Talk about mixed messages and contradictory information. Which is it? Is it what you told Jim Adams or what you told me?

My read is that the reply you received doesn’t contradict Jim’s post at all; it says nothing about other plan options going away. You reply is a cheerleader pitch for the new plan only, and there is a new play, after all.

Good point, Vic. I wrote back to the HE and asked, “Thanks for you response. So does this mean that the plan I’m on (Personal plan) will disappear and that if I want more functionality than the free plan offers (e.g., no ads, more media storage), I’ll have to upgrade from the Personal plan at $48/yr to the Pro plan at $180/ yr?”

Nothing like a very specific question to get a very specific answer!

I haven’t seen anything about this Pro plan thingy, personally. When will this be taking effect? I mean, I have the Personal plan too and, while I haven’t decided what I’ll do if my options are to go with the free plan, pay $180/year or transfer to Blogger, I at least as of yet haven’t seen any way to get on the Pro plan now.

The details are sketchy, but some have speculated that you’ll be able to keep your current plan until it expires. Mine expires in January ‘23, so that should give some time to see how things shake out.

I have a completely different observation. When I copy text from elsewhere (any elsewhere) to share, the separation between the second-to-last and last paragraphs disappears (almost as if, in appearance, they are not different paragraphs). Like I said, totally other subject matter. Sometimes, if I put enough extra spaces (return, return, return) between those last paragraphs, one space will still end up appearing. Yet, sometimes not (no matter how many returns I insert).

Yeah. Almost funny. A little bit funny.

The person who told you sounds like a salesperson who is selling something they’ve been asked to push. Seems almost copy paste. I hope the response to Jim is the accurate one.

Thanks for keeping us posted. I backed up my site yesterday and am trying to figure out if I can move it to my .org site. I renew in July and I figure that it will take me that long to figure out how to restructure things if I must (I have too many photos to “go free” and I can’t see paying that much for a hobby). I guess I should be glad for the intellectual challenge…but I’m not feeling it.

Maybe they will just let us keep our current plans. I doubt it, but maybe.

Any idea when they’ll implement the new plan? Perhaps I can renew my plan on previous rates?

A case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing?

You CAN renew in advance. I’m supposed to renew next month, but maybe I’ll renew this month which will give me a year to decide if i want to find a new host or finally retire for real.

I’m not clear here. This guy seems to be confirming that they are adding a new plan. But I’m not clear that he’s saying they’re going to deprecate existing plans. This could be my eyes, but are you picking that up from somewhere?
Since you have an open channel now, it might be worth clarifying that.

I know when I have contacted them, there has been an issue with them not listening properly to the question, so whatever they say, it might be worth being absolutely explicit with them.
