Thunder Road

The rumbling sound woke me up from my slumber. It sounded like the garbage truck was in front of my house, with the lumbering vibration of the truck’s engine and the noise of the mechanical arms reaching out to grab the bin, pick it up, and dump its contents into the truck. Then the sound of the motor again as the truck moved to the next house.

I looked at the clock on the table next to my bed. 6:50. Yeah, that’s about the time the trash, recycling, and compost trucks come by every Tuesday morning. But wait. It’s Thursday. I got out of bed, went to the kitchen, where my wife, who is always up before me, was preparing her oatmeal breakfast. “Did I just hear thunder?” I asked. She nodded.

I ran to the window and looked out. There were ominous looking clouds, but no rain. It was dry outside. Damn.

Thunder storms are few and far between where we live. A rarity. And because we are in the midst of a significant drought, rain would be a blessing. But in this case, there was thunder but no rain. So what good is having thunder with no rain?

Ah, Mother Nature, you’re quite the tease, aren’t you?

I can always identify the sound of the garbage truck by the squeal of its brakes, and I wonder why they never fix them.

The rain has migrated down here to Queensland. Floods, evacuations. No bushfires yet. Wildfires, you?……

I hope you get some well deserved rain. I was surprised yesterday when I woke up to a drizzle! Wasn’t expecting it.

I heard them too. My first thought was that Russia was attacking! (Okay – too much news for me, I know)
