I read this post from Mary J. Melange (aka bikerchick57) and her message really resonated with me and it makes so much sense. We mustn’t take our democracy for granted and use “freedom” as a buzzword for voicing our petty annoyances. Please take a few minutes to read her post.

“We need to give serious consideration to the fragility of democracy and less to our annoyances (like gas prices and masks).” ~Pam, on Facebook~ I …
Are you Annoyed?
This is one of the things I am very careful about — separating things that annoy or aggravate me from things that really impinge on my freedom. Right now, what the RMV is doing with driver’s license is actually going to make it pretty much impossible for me to get a “REAL ID” that would let me enter Federal building or fly and will make even getting a standard NON “REAL” license very difficult. It is going to disenfranchise poor people who can’t afford to pay others to track down their paperwork, older people who aren’t very computer literate, anyone who just can’t figure out what they want. I’m having trouble, so you can be sure many others will be baffled. And, depending on from where you need it — for example, New York — it gets expensive. Three birth certificates and one marriage certificate (so far) has come to more than $200 — and they are running months late, so regardless, my license won’t be on time.
Frankly I’m wondering if I will even be able to get a license at all. This IS an impingement on my freedom and it’s going to get worse and worse. It’s one thing to require paperwork from 10 years ago, but quite another to expect material that’s more than 50 years old when you no longer remember exact dates or locations.

Marilyn, this is something that bothers me greatly. A political party bent on disenfrachising people, making it difficult or almost impossible to get an ID, vote, receive services or get on an airplane. And then some of the party’s followers whining about masks and vaccines and their “rights.” It is disgusting. I hope somehow you are able to get an ID in time, as you should in a democracy.

You watch the people of Russia protest Putin and you watch Ukraine’s give up their whole worlds to fight, knowing they’ll probably die…and then you see some white privileged whining Western complain about wearing a mask…It makes me mad.
