You’re Just a Mean Person

“I’ll have a mocha frappuccino,” Gloria said to the barista.

“I’ll have a mocha frappuccino,” the man standing in line behind Gloria said.

Gloria rapidly turned around. “Are you really trying to mimic me?” she said, a nasty tone in her voice.

The man smiled at Gloria. “You don’t recognize me, do you?” he asked.

She looked at him for a second and said, “Oh, right. You’re the guy who teased me when I couldn’t figure out how to get the copy machine to work.”

“Guilty as charged,” he said, a smile on his face. “Oh, my name is Alex, by the way,” he said, holding out his hand for Gloria to shake.

The barista called out, “Mocha frappuccino for Gloria.”

Gloria ignored Alex’s hand, turned around, took out her credit card, and started to hand it to the barista. But before she could, Alex handed the barista his credit card and told her to make another one for him and to charge them both to his card.

“No thank you, Alex,” Gloria said in an insouciant manner. “You’re just a mean person who likes to make fun of people, mimicking them, teasing them. You think paying for my frappuccino today is going to make that okay?”

“You’re right,” Alex admitted. “I’ve always been a bit of a smart aleck, but I only tend to be that way to impress people I like.”

“Well, Alex, most grown men outgrew that kind of behavior in grade school,” Gloria said. “So why don’t you just totter off for now and maybe next time we cross paths you can demonstrate to me that you’re capable of being an adult.” Gloria grabbed her drink and left the coffee shop. But before she went out the door, she turned, smiled, and winked at Alex. She had to admit that he was kind of cute.

Oh, god no. I was with her until… the end (not in the usual meaning of that as a saying). I married someone who does the mimicking thing as if it should be endearing. He didn’t do it before we were married (or, really, until recently). Ugh. I admit, though, cute is hard to resist.

I would say “some men” – most men stick to behaviors that were cute in their preteen years but not well into their later years (married to one!)
