HIM
She’s so beautiful. She’s perfect and she takes my breath away. I was planning to pop the question tonight. I have the ring in my pocket and I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment. But look at her. The expression on her face; she looks so pensive. She seems to be lost in thought and I don’t think she’s thinking about me at all. She was so quiet at dinner, not really present. Sure, she’s physically here, but her mind is clearly somewhere else. Maybe her heart is too. I’m not going to do it. I’m not going to suffer the humiliation of her rejection. I’m going to finish my glass of wine and then drop her off at her place. It’s a shame because I really love her and I thought we could have been very happy together.
HER
Look at him, sitting there looking so goddam debonair in his tux. He’s been stringing me along for months, toying with me. He invites me to this high class, elegant restaurant, tells me to dress accordingly, presents me with a bouquet of long stemmed roses. What else could I think but that he was going to ask me to marry him tonight? But he’s not, is he? At dinner he made polite conversation, mostly small talk, really, but seemed oddly distant, almost preoccupied. And now he’s got this smug look on his face, casually sipping his wine, showing no signs of popping the question. This is mortifying. I really thought we had something special, but I’m feeling so hurt right now that I can’t even look at him. I’m going to call an Uber and go home. I’m so in love with him and I don’t want him to see me cry.

What do you think a guy should do, fandango, in a restaurant like that? Do you propose across the table, or get on a knee? It could be quite daunting to get on bended knee and risk rejection (in public — which would be worse than speaking in public in my opinion — in a certain perspective).
