“You need to let go,” she said.
“I can’t let go. You’re my soulmate,” he said.
“I used to feel that way too. But not anymore,” she said.
“But I still do. You’re everything to me,” he said.
“It’s time for us both to make a fresh start,” she said.
“I thought we were happy,” he said.
“We were, but I am not happy now. It’s time to move on,” she said.
“Move on to what? I’d be lost without you,” he said.
“You’ll find your way. You’ll be fine. You just need to let go,” she said.
“We can work it out, whatever it is, together,” he said.
“No, it’s too late. I don’t love you anymore,” she said.
“Please, I don’t want to let go,” he said.
“You need to let go,” she said.

I was having nightmares (had them a few nights recently). Then, I ran across an article (I don’t remember if I did a search on what dreams like those — involving death — mean or if I sort of accidentally saw such a headline) and I read that dreaming about death has to do with change. I realized I had to consciously let go of the transient space in time when my mother was thankful I had come to help her (that was until I sorted out the way she uses people to enable her addiction to being abused), which was followed by my studied avoidance of being fooled. There doesn’t have to be any actual death (in “real” life) referenced by a dream with death. But my best coping was to realize my mother is dead to me (because I choose to live). [I don’t know how to explain it, but that doesn’t mean I will leave behind trying to do what is best for her, too.]
