For her weekly Blogging Insights prompts, Dr. Tanya provides us with a quote about blogging or writing and asks us to express our opinion about said quote.
This week’s quote is from Justine Larbalestier, an Australian writer of young adult fiction.
“Blogging, I love you no matter how out of fashion you are.”
Overall, I believe that blogging is pretty much alive and well. In fact, one site I saw recently claimed that there are more than 600 million blogs in the world today, out of over 1.9 billion websites.
But of those 600 million blogs, how many are from bloggers like us? There are, it seems, two broad categories of blogs in the world: “personal” blogs, which are often focused on the writer/blogger, and “commercial” blogs, which focus mostly on content marketing. A personal blog can be filled with journal-like entries that fill readers in on the writer’s opinions, struggles, and major life events. It may also be a venue for people to showcase their flash fiction, poetry, photographs, etc. A commercial blog is essentially designed to sell you something.
I’m going to focus on personal blogging, which is what I do and what I believe the vast majority of you do, as well. There are those who contend that personal blogging is dying out, that it’s a thing of the past. They claim that social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) video sharing (YouTube, Tik Tok), podcasts, and streaming have replaced personal blogging. But I contend that blogging is still a part of many people’s lives.
I do admit that most of the bloggers I follow are “older.” Like me, many are senior citizens. Or you may be a younger Baby Boomer or a Millennial. I am not sure that the short-attention-span, click-bait, younger generations have the patience to write and read personal blogs. So once we Baby Boomers die out, maybe tradition, personal blogging will, in fact, fall out of fashion.
In the meantime, though, I say:

Amen, Fandango! I enjoy blogging, both sharing and reading, too much to want to give it up.

I agree with all and LOVE that image!😂. It’s important to express yourself in a friendly environment and we have that here.👍🏻

I know for me, I love blogging, and prefer to write, rather than video blog, but then, I’ve always kept a journal, and I enjoy it!

Blogging is popular amongst all ages in truth. Blogging is not dead and as your stats point out it is rising. Social media will if anything be the trend that drops. already we have seen many social platforms in the last ten years fold or go under or change names and yet blogging gets stronger and stronger. not just personal blogs not just content marketing blogs but all blogs.

I hope it continues to stay strong, Rory.

It will do, long after we have gone, it’ll be slightly different, more like a visual comic book l feel, but’ll still be here.
Social medias are the ones that keep changing – or disappearing. Whereas blogging is ever evolving.
Consumers will always consume content and always be looking to consume it.

I agree with you. I think the biggest wave of personal blogging is beginning to ebb for all the reasons you mention. On the other hand, retirement really is the perfect time to blog. I could never have done this while I was working full time, especially since I was a working writer.
I had a great run for those first 10 years. I have to wonder if I’ve got another 10 great years. I am not getting any younger. Wouldn’t that be totally cool, finding a way to get younger — without losing the brain you gained with the years?

That would be cool. But I am not counting on that happening before I reach my expiration date.

Don’t think blogging will go out of fashion…coz even if u see with youngsters today, they have a lot to say and not many have the outlet to express it all out to, hence blogging or vlogging (with the video) has become a very common trend today.
There are a whole lot of writers out there…who still believe that writing brings joy like no other.
So, young or old-blogging is here to stay.

Fandango, if you were not to mention your age or that you being senior citizen or the likes….to me…you’d pass off as a matured young lad who possesses one hell of a writing talent and an excellent brain.
That’s what I thought after reading initially…blogs and stuff that you had on your site.
A young soul stuck in a vintage body kind of case or the other way round?
I don’t look at age or gender(gender maybe a little) when it comes to talent. Talent is Talent-Period and Fandango has dollops of it when it comes to writing😇 March on…young man!

Thank you. That is one of the highest compliments anyone has ever given me. I try to keep my writing fresh and young at heart even though I’m actually an old fart. I appreciate you confirming that I’m achieving a modicum of success in doing so. 🙏

The world could do with more compliments, Fandango. And I’m never too far away from giving some if truly deserved. Keep it up!

I agree that many of our community are over the age of 50, perhaps we have more time at our hands to read and write blogs. But I’ve come across many young bloggers too who are interested in writing. Most are students or young professionals.

Maybe there is hope that blogging will continue to stay in fashion even with the younger crowd.

Personally, I think that places like Twitter and Facebook will die out with their toxicity. Something new will take over. I used to be a social media addict, but they are becoming more toxic and none of the platforms do anything about it.
